Research is a systematic investigation or experimentation, including research development and methodology, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. Generalizable knowledge typically indicates that the results will be included in a thesis or dissertation, published, or presented at a conference.Â
Any activity meeting the definition of research above and that involves human subjects attending or employed by Kilgore College (i.e., human beings or data related to human beings), excluding certain exemptions, is subject to College approval. While KC has no formal institutional review board (IRB) process, all requests will be evaluated by College personnel who have expertise in research and/or the research topic, under the guidance of the Director of Institutional Research and the Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Research.
Determination of approval will be made by the Director of Institutional Research and/or Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Research. In instances that require review at a more in depth level prior to approval determination, the Directors  may assemble a committee of individuals with subject matter expertise. The committee will be charged with review and recommendation for the request. Final approval will be determined by the Director of Institutional Research and/or Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Research.
IRB approval requests should be submitted in email to iresearch@kilgore.edu.
All departments and programs participate in the Kilgore College Annual Planning Process as part of our commitment to continuous improvement.
Academic departments, student service areas, and non-academic departments such as Human Resources, Institutional Effectiveness, and Marketing, engage in the Annual Planning process by completing an Annual Improvement Plan (AIP). AIPs are designed to identify, achieve, and measure the success of goals in an ongoing manner. Educational programs awarding an AAS or a Certificate of Completion also engage in the Assessment Process which includes completing an AIP to set program-level goals based on prior year assessment results, as well as measuring program student learning outcomes through the Assessment Process. Â
The entirety of the KC Annual Planning and Assessment Process occurs in alignment with the academic year in the following manner:
