What is the Risk Management Institute?

The Risk Management Institute offers FREE safety courses through a generous grant from the Texas Mutual Insurance Company. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and certificates will be awarded upon successful completion of each course. There is no cost, but pre-registration is required.

UPCOMING CLASSES:

CPR and first aid training

You can easily register online for CPR and first aid training through Innovative Health Solutions, which offers a full schedule of upcoming classes in Basic Life Support (BLS) and American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/Basic First Aid. Classes are held throughout the year in Longview and at partner locations like the UT Tyler campus, and registration for specific dates is listed on the Innovative Health Solutions registration page — simply choose the class you want and complete the online sign-up to secure your spot. Whether you need certification for your job, professional renewal, or basic lifesaving skills, online registration makes it simple to find and enroll in the class that fits your schedule.

RISK MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE CLASSES

RMI to Offer Free Basic Handgun Safety Course

RMI will offer a free Basic Handgun Safety course on March 16, 2026.

The classroom portion of the course will take place on campus, followed by hands-on training at the East Texas Rifle and Pistol Club ARA.

Basic Handgun Safety is an entry-level course designed for new gun owners. The course focuses on:

  • Firearm safety
  • Proper handling
  • Secure storage
  • Fundamental shooting techniques
Course Schedule
  • DATE: March 16, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • CLASSROOM PORTION: Held in the Whitten Applied Technology Building, located at 1306 S. Henderson Blvd. in Kilgore
  • HANDS-ON PORTION: Held at the East Texas Rifle & Pistol Club, located at 1045 FM 2011 in Longview.
Requirements

Participants must bring:

  • A pistol with a capacity greater than five rounds
  • 100 rounds of ammunition
  • Ball cap
  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection
  • Closed-toe shoes
