The Workforce Pell Grant expands federal Pell Grant eligibility to certain short-term, high-quality workforce training programs that prepare students for high-demand careers. The program was authorized through federal legislation to increase access to career-focused education that leads directly to employment opportunities.

What is Workforce Pell?

Workforce Pell allows eligible students to use federal Pell Grant funds for approved short-term workforce training programs that:

  • Lead to industry-recognized credentials.
  • Align with workforce and labor market needs.
  • Provide training for in-demand occupations.
  • Meet federal quality and accountability standards.
  • Prepare students for employment and wage advancement.
The goal is to expand access to workforce education while reducing student debt and increasing credential attainment.

Student Eligibility

To receive Workforce Pell funding, students generally must:

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Demonstrate eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant.
  • Enroll in an approved Workforce Pell program.
  • Meet all federal student aid requirements.
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).

Federal student aid regulations under Title IV continue to apply to Workforce Pell recipients, including citizenship requirements, verification requirements, SAP standards and other eligibility criteria.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Students receiving Workforce Pell funding must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress in accordance with federal financial aid regulations.

SAP standards typically include:

Maximum timeframe standards

Failure to meet SAP requirements may result in the loss of federal financial aid eligibility. Students may be eligible to submit an appeal in accordance with institutional policies.
