Meagan King, current member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, visited Kilgore College Oct. 27 to teach a master class for KC Dance students, providing an opportunity to learn firsthand from one of the most influential organizations in the history of modern dance.
Sixty KC Dance students also attended a performance by the company at UT Tylerโs Cowan Center last week.
Founded in 1926 by dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, the company is recognized as the oldest dance company in the United States. The organization celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2026, marking a century of contributions to modern dance.
“We were honored to welcome Meagan King to Kilgore College,” said Angela Aulds, KC dance instructor. “This master class was more than learning about the Martha Graham Technique, it was a pivotal moment for the KC Dance Department, its students and Kilgore College. Learning about its history and artistic contributions was a meaningful experience for our dancers. I hope our students remember this moment forever.”
Graham developed a movement technique based on contraction and release, which became a foundation of modern dance training.
Throughout its history, the Martha Graham Dance Company has performed internationally and presented works from Graham’s repertoire alongside contemporary choreography.
The master class and performance in Tyler provided KC dance students with opportunities to experience the company’s techniques and choreography while gaining a deeper understanding of its influence on modern dance.
