Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your interest in the Radiologic Science Program at Kilgore College!

The Radiologic Science Program is an Associate of Applied Science program located at the Torrence Health Science Education Center (1611 Henderson Blvd, Kilgore, TX 75662). Students enrolled in this program are prepared to assume a professional role in the field of Radiography.

The program is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and is recognized as an accredited educational program in Radiography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Upon successful program completion—and after meeting all ARRT and Texas Medical Board (TMB) requirements—graduates are eligible to sit for the national ARRT certification examination in Radiography. A passing score is required to obtain ARRT registry status, which is necessary for certification as a Medical Radiologic Technologist (MRT) by the TMB and for employment as a radiographer in Texas.

Note: The ARRT and TMB each require applicants to meet specified legal and ethical standards.

The program provides both clinical and didactic (classroom and laboratory) education in the field of Radiologic Science. Because of limited classroom space and the availability of clinical assignments, enrollment is limited. To be considered for admission, all required application materials must be submitted by the deadline listed on the Kilgore College Radiologic Science website.

ARRT Eligibility Requirement

If yes, you are required to seek clarification of eligibility of the ARRT registry examination prior to enrollment in this course of study. This is necessary in determining clinical and program eligibility. Information and instructions for this process can be found here: www.arrt.org/pages/resources/ethics-information

Program Acceptance Responsibilities

If accepted to the Radiologic Science Program:

  1. You will be responsible for your own transportation to the KC campus and all clinical assignments.
  2. You will be responsible for purchasing uniforms at the end of the fall semester as arranged by Radiologic Science Program faculty.
  3. You will be responsible for purchasing student liability insurance that will be assessed with tuition fees each fall semester while enrolled in the program.
  4. You will be responsible for purchasing for each enrolled program course any adopted texts, e-products, or other required materials, fees, or subscriptions.

Essential Job Functions Form

The following are essential job functions for any Radiologic Technologist as compiled from observations of a wide variety of job experience.

1. Visual Acuity
  • Distinguish whether beam is perpendicular, horizontal, or angled through the center of anatomical areas being x-rayed to the center of the image receptor.
  • Perform or assist with radiography procedures that involve placement of needles, catheters, etc., into proper anatomic structures of the patient.
  • Distinguish objects in the darkroom, radiographic room, on imaging monitors, or electronic control panels in light-controlled areas.
  • Read protocols for radiography procedures in the department.
  • Perform data entry tasks using digital and computer terminals.
2. Hearing Acuity
  • Hearing must be sufficient to communicate with others.
  • Distinguish phonetic sounds either mechanically transmitted or from conversation in dimly lighted environments such as during fluoroscopic procedures.
  • Hear and retain pertinent information to relay instructions.
  • Hear and respond to patient questions and clinical history information during exam processing.
3. Speaking Ability
  • Speak clearly and loudly enough to be understood in the radiology department, surgery, or over the phone.
  • Maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients and peers through effective communication.
4. Digital Dexterity
  • Grasp and manipulate small objects required to perform job functions.
  • Operate a variety of imaging equipment and accessories.
  • Arms and hands—or functional artificial limbs—are essential to perform radiographic procedures and transfer patients.
  • Legs and feet—or functional artificial limbs—are essential for maintaining balance, performing duties, and transporting patients.
5. Physical Ability
  • Stand for the majority of a normal workday.
  • Maneuver through congested areas or units to position patients and transport them.
  • Raise arms while maintaining balance when positioning a patient, reaching over an exam table, or adjusting the x-ray tube.
  • Maneuver between different floors within an institution.
  • Pull/push medical equipment, adjust x-ray tubes to standard distances, and transfer patients to/from exam tables, stretchers, or wheelchairs.
  • Personal weight must allow free movement in small control areas, quick response during patient emergencies, and maneuverability during portable radiography procedures.
6. Adaptive Ability
  • Complete tasks or job functions within established deadlines.
  • Complete required tasks under stressful conditions.
  • Track and complete multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Perform independently with minimal supervision.
  • Interact appropriately with diverse personalities.
