Producing a Pipeline of Skilled Workers to help Business and Industry

What is the Advanced Welding Academy?

The Kilgore College Advanced Welding Academy is partnership between KC and Kilgore Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) that provides advanced training for welders who have academic experience but need to develop specific skills. The academy provides additional training for welders who are already employed by a company needing advanced skills.

The goal of the KC Advanced Welding Academy is to augment the growth of area industry by producing a pipeline of skilled workers to fill high-demand welding job openings in the fabrication industry.

It is located in the new Advanced Technology Center in Kilgore (map).

Advanced Welding Academy

Who the Academy is For

The program is not for beginning welding students.

Students who qualify for the program have either:

  • Already graduated from an accredited welding program and wish to obtain specific advanced skills, or...
  • Been referred to the academy as current welding employee of a current business or industry
Requirements of the Program

All students that apply to the program will take a welding test to identify basic competencies in welding skills.  After passing a test, a customized training program to solve skill gaps will be developed for each student.  Students are required to pass a drug test, clock in on time, follow all safety regulations and be accountable for their work and behavior.

Skills Taught by the Academy

At this time, three specific skills are taught at the academy in a modular format:

  • Welding
  • Advanced Structural Steel
  • Pipefitting & Pressure Vessels
Location of the Advanced Technology Center

The academy is set up in the Advanced Technology Center, a 6,000 square foot facility adjacent to Synergy Park in Kilgore (map).  The building includes classrooms and actual welding and fabrication shop space, as well as two brand new virtual reality welding machine stations.

Ross Eason

At 18 years of age, Ross Eason went to work for LeTourneau in Corpus Christi, building offshore jack up rigs. It was here that he learned how to weld. He then went to Beaumont and worked for the Ideco division of Dresser Industries. He worked there for 5 years and made shop foreman, building drilling rigs. After that, he left and started his own business doing rig welding making pipelines, which lasted for 10 years. After that, he went into offshore production. He went to school in Tomball to learn how to run offfshore platforms. He was the first offshore operator on the first offshore sulfur platform, working in 100 percent H2S conditions (deadly sulfur gas). He then went back to rig welding at Darr. He started his own business in 1990 with his brother and another partner. This company was very successful and did work for Halliburton, Mobil, Texaco and Texas Eastman to name a few. That business was sold to JW Operating in 2006. He has more than 45 years of welding experience. He has experience with any kind of welding machinery and has worked built structure, vessel, pipeline and pipeline fitting.

Tommie Williams has 28 years of experience and has extensive knowledge in all processes of welding and industrial fabrication. During this time he has been a quality control supervisor and shop supervisor. Mr. Williams also served as a Kilgore College Continuing Education welding instructor for
four years.
