TSI Assessment

As mandated by the Texas state legislature, prior to enrolling in any college-level credit-hour courses, all first time in college students must be assessed in the basic skill areas of reading, writing and math unless otherwise exempt.

Requirements of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI):

The requirements of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) are the result of a clearly established need for students to gain a higher level of academic preparation in order to enhance their chances of collegiate success. Required by Texas Education Code 51.306, TSI went into effect in the fall semester of 2003. Its provisions include basic skills testing, advisement, and mandatory remediation (when test scores so indicate) as indicated by the local college plan. (See TSI Exemptions below.)

Exemptions:

TSI Assessment:

The TSI Assessment is the new state placement exam which assesses a student’s skill in the academic areas of math, reading and writing for college-readiness. Students must complete the application for admission at least 48 hours prior to scheduling a testing appointment. The test is untimed but will range from 1-5 hours to complete. Students are required to complete a pre-assessment activity prior to testing and must provide proof of such activity upon arrival to test. The cost of the entire exam is $40 and $20 for a part of the exam.

You are ready to schedule your testing appointment if you have:

  • Submitted an admissions application
  • Submitted transcripts to Registrar's Office
  • Completed the PAA (Pre-Assessment Activity)
  • Checked AccessKC to determine your TSI status and to obtain your KC student ID number.

If you have completed the steps listed above, you ARE NOW READY to contact the testing center to schedule your exam.

If you have not completed all steps listed above, you are NOT READY to schedule your testing appointment.

Remember that you must:

  • Pay the testing fee to the Cashier's Office and bring your receipt on test day.
  • Print a copy of the Pre-Assessment Activity certification and bring with you on test day.
  • Provide a valid photo ID and your KC ID student ID number on test day.
