Through the generosity of the T.L.L. Temple Foundation, Kilgore College received $125,000 to develop a special student emergency fund to support the financial needs of students who are enrolled in targeted degrees/programs and making successful progress towards completion.
This fund offers emergency financial assistance to KC students with emergencies or unexpected hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund serves to offset short-term financial need and is not a replacement for or permanent supplement to financial aid. Awards are not considered loans and do not require repayment. While the maximum annual award is $2,500 per student, based upon the availability of funds, students may apply multiple times per year until this maximum is reached. Funds are limited and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
Examples of emergencies:
- Educational expenses not covered by financial aid
- Replacement of essential personal belongings due to fire, flood, theft, or natural disaster
- Emergency or temporary housing assistance
- Medication costs related to emergency medical care (not covered by insurance)
- Assistance with rent, utilities, and internet connectivity
- Emergency transportation
Types of expenses that are NOT covered:
- Any costs that are already covered in a need-based financial aid package (tuition and fees, standard room and board allowance, book allowance, and miscellaneous expenses)
- Non-essential utilities, household, or furniture costs not related to damage or theft
- Parking tickets, court fees, or other fines
- Costs for entertainment, recreation, non-emergency travel, or other non-essential expenses
Student emergency fund eligibility:
To be eligible to apply for the Student Emergency Fund, you must:
- Have completed at least 12 semester credit hours and have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA. (Alternate eligibility criteria will be considered for workforce/continuing education students. Consideration will be given if extraordinary extenuating circumstances exist for undergraduate students.)
Be enrolled in one of the following majors/programs:
- Computer and Information Technology - degree or certificate
- Business Management
- Instrumentation and Electrical Technology
- Legal Assisting
- Nursing – ADN and VN
- Radiologic Technology
- Emergency Medical Technology and Paramedic
- Physical Therapist Assistant
- Fire Academy and Fire Science – degree or certificate
- Police Academy
- Automotive Technology - degree or certificate
- Diesel Technology - degree or certificate
- Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) – degree or certificate
- Electrical Power Technology
- Welding Technology – degree or certificate
- Commercial Driving – CDL
- Pharmacy Technology
- Be currently enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours if attending a Fall or Spring term (or at least 6 credit hours if attending a Summer term) or a workforce/continuing education program (such as police academy, pharmacy technology, etc.), be in good academic and disciplinary standing, and actively attending class. Students enrolled in programs that have fully scheduled semesters with less than 12 hours (e.g., AD nursing) and students who are in their final semester and need less than 12 hours to meet graduation requirements are exempt from the 12 hour requirement stated above.
- Have a financial hardship/need documented on the FAFSA/TASFA or resulting from an emergency, accident, or other unexpected, critical incident such as a job loss. Please note, applicants must complete the TASFA or FAFSA, but do not have to qualify for federal financial aid to be considered for emergency aid.
- Complete all application questions in full and submit supporting documentation, as requested.
- Demonstrate that all other possible resources have been considered and are either unavailable or insufficient.
Note: The applicant’s prior academic standing is taken into consideration during the review.

Emergency fund steps:
- Apply electronically.
- Wait for the committee to review your application. The committee’s decision will be sent to your KC email.
- Complete any additional steps outlined in the decision email.
All application decisions are final. If approved, students will be notified of the amount and method of disbursement.
Awards may range from $50 - $2,500. The award amount is based on need and available funding. Award availability is limited and is disbursed on a first-come, first-served system.
Students receiving assistance from this fund must submit receipts to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships within ten (10) days of receiving the award. Failure to do so could prohibit the use of this fund.
