ATHENS, TX -- It just wasn't Kilgore College's night as both the men's and women's basketball teams lost to Trinity Valley Community College in Athens Jan. 17.
Trinity Valley men 59, KC men 56
The Kilgore College men led all throughout the game until 59 seconds left in the contest when TVCC's Dedrick Basile hit a three-pointer to give the Cardinals a one point lead, 57-56.
KC missed a shot on its next possession and was forced to foul with 17 seconds left to put Basile on the line with two shots.
Basile made both free throws to give TVCC the 59-56 lead. KC had one more opportunity with under a second left in the game, but couldn't get a clean inbounds pass resulting in the 59-56 Cardinal victory.
Basile was the game's high scorer with 22 points. KC had two players in double figures with Michael Thomas scoring 11 and Jaleel Wheeler scoring 10. Jonathan Milligan, who scored 35 points in the previous game, was held to 9 points. Bakari Copeland also scored 9 for KC.
With the loss, KC drops to 12-7 overall and 4-5 in Region XIV play. TVCC improves to 7-2 in conference play and 16-3 overall.
The next game for the KC men is versus Paris Junior College in Kilgore Wednesday, Jan. 21. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Masters Gymnasium.
Trinity Valley women 70, KC women 49
The Lady Cards but up a big run in the second half to run away from the Lady Rangers en route to a 70-49 victory Jan. 17 in Athens. The Lady Rangers never led in the contest.
Both the KC Lady Rangers and TVCC Lady Cardinals struggled from the field -- KC shot 41 percent from the field and TVCC was only 35 percent from the field.
The Lady Rangers also struggled at the free throw line, only making 50 percent of its shots (6-of-12).
TVCC's Leashja Grant had a huge night, scoring 22 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. KC only had one player in double figures with Adrianna Edwards who scored 10.
With the loss, the Lady Rangers drop to 5-11 overall and 2-7 in Region XIV play. TVCC's women improve to 17-1 overall and 9-0 in Region XIV play.
The KC women will play at home Wednesday, Jan. 21, versus Paris Junior College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Masters Gymnasium.
