The Flare newspaper, magazine win awards from TIPA

KC sophomore Lucas Strough of Longview took home first place in Print News Writing and The Flare newspaper staff received an Honorable Mention in the Best of Show (Div. 2) competition during this year’s Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention held March 22-24 in Dallas.

More than 400 students, representing 44 schools from Texas, competed head-to-head in 30 events during on-site contests.

KC was the only community college competing in a division which included Angelo State University, Midwestern State University, Rice University, Tarleton State University, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, University of Houston-Clear Lake and The University of Texas at Tyler.

The Flare Magazine won first in Overall Excellence and The Flare newspaper and The Ranger Yearbook won second in Overall Excellence.

The Flare newspaper staff received first place in Overall Design.

KC’s student publications staff won 33 awards: 17 for production; 10 for visual reporting and six for narrative reporting. The Flare newspaper staff also brought home a second and third place in newspaper headline writing.

Students also had the opportunity to choose from more than 60 workshops presented by professional journalists and instructors over a two-day period.

Tiffany Johnson and Tina Marie Reed (both from Longview) were co-editors of the 2017 Ranger Yearbook. Meaghan Morton, of Trinidad, was the Spring 2017 editor of The Flare and Allison Taliaferro was the Fall 2017 editor. Timothy Stuckey, of White Oak, was the editor of The Flare Magazine.

TIPA is the largest and oldest state collegiate press association in the nation. It was established in 1909 to recognize excellence in Texas collegiate journalism.
