Texas Mutual Insurance Company's Jeremy Hansen, manager of regional safety services, was on campus Feb. 9 to present a $100,000 grant to Kilgore College's Risk Management Institute.
This year marks the tenth-straight year that Texas Mutual, the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance, has given the $100,000 grant to total $1 million in donations to KC.
The grant pays for workplace safety courses offered free to community employers, workers and the general public.
“We continue to be grateful for this partnership between Texas Mutual and Kilgore College, which has helped educate many East Texas employees,” said Dr. Brenda Kays, KC president. “The safety training provided through the institute is a valuable resource for our community and helps local industry professionals prevent injuries on the job and possibly save lives.”
Since 1999, Texas Mutual has awarded $5.2 million in safety education grants. KC is one of five community colleges in Texas that provides safety classes via funding from Texas Mutual. More than half of these employees live in KC’s four-county service area of Gregg, Harrison, Rusk and Upshur counties.
Since the inception of KC’s Risk Management Institute in 2008, employees from more than 800 companies have traveled to KC from 79 Texas counties to take advantage of these free courses. More than half of these employees lived in KC’s four-county service area of Gregg, Harrison, Rusk and Upshur counties.
Over the past nine years, the KC Risk Management Institute has hosted more than 363 workplace safety classes for approximately 5,053 attendees, and nearly 1,778 individuals have received OSHA training cards through available courses.
KC sets course topics in response to the needs of area businesses and industries. Courses offered periodically at the Risk Management Institute include accident investigation, OSHA training, Spanish for safety supervisors, defensive driving, fleet safety management and small business safety, among others.
“Workplace safety education will always be a sound investment, and we are happy to partner with Kilgore College to make safety programs a priority,” said Woody Hill, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual Insurance Company.
“The courses available to area employees help workers across Texas be more prepared and successful on the job. These grants and other safety programs at Texas Mutual demonstrate our commitment to the prevention of workplace accidents and to overall workplace safety.”
