Student newspaper, magazine win Silver Crown awards

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association awarded The Flare and The Flare Magazine as Silver Crown winners at the 2017 College Media Convention.

The Flare, Kilgore College’s weekly student newspaper, was the only college print edition newspaper in the nation to receive the 2017 CSPA Silver Crown award.

It was judged by CSPA on 10 issues published during spring 2016 when Kathryn Agee, of Longview, was editor.

The Flare Magazine was one of nine collegiate print magazines to receive a Silver Crown.

Students enrolled in the COMM 2389 class were responsible for editorial content, photography and design of the magazine.

This year a total of 1,100 newspapers, magazines, yearbooks and digital publications issued during the 2015-2016 academic school year were eligible for judging in the 2017 Crown Awards Program.

Publications were judged on excellence in design, photography, concept, coverage and writing.

Advisers for The Flare and The Flare Magazine are Rachel Stallard and O. Rufus Lovett.

Operated by Columbia University since 1925, the CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs.
