KILGORE, TX -- The Kilgore College Rangers softball team snatched the lead late to pull out a 7-5 victory over the Northeast Texas Community College Eagles in the first game of a doubleheader April 10 at The Ballpark at KC Commons.
The game was tied at five runs with KC batting in the bottom of the fifth when Brooke Goynes singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run.
KC built a five-run lead in the first inning and then held off NTCC's charge by scoring three runs in the failed comeback.
Kilgore got on the board first in the first inning when MaKenna Bell drove in two runs on a home run.
In the top of the fourth inning, NTCC tied things up at five runs, but Goynes got the lead with a single.
Micheala Latham was the winning pitcher for KC, lasting three and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out six and walking zero.
Jamie Franks took the loss for NTCC, lasting six innings, allowing seven runs on 13 hits.
Mattie McQuary started the game for KC. She surrendered five runs on three hits, striking out four batters over three and a third innings.
KC smacked three home runs on the day with Bell and Ella Ortiz in the first inning and Kelsey Ahart in the sixth inning.
The Rangers racked up 13 hits with Ortiz, Ahart, Bell, Goynes and Nicole King with multiple hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader, despite a five-run deficit in the fifth inning, KC almost caught up to NTCC, but eventually fell to the Eagles, 11-9.
KC tallied four runs in the second inning with RBIs by Tori Tovar and Bria Tovar.
KC improves to 17-15 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
The Rangers will host Angelina College Friday, April 12, at The Ballpark at KC Commons. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
