BRENHAM, TX -- The Rangers kept their playoff hopes alive, shutting down the Blinn College offense Oct. 17, defeating the Buccaneers, 17-9.
At halftime, KC was up 3-0 on the Bucs, with the only score coming from a 32-yard Troy Duran field goal just before the half ended.
A key moment came on a fourth down and 3 for the Rangers late in the third quarter when Kilgore QB Jaylen Fails completed a long pass to Garrett Barton to the two yard line to convert the first down. On the next play, Fails scored on a QB keeper to make the score 10-0 after three periods.
Blinn finally got into the scoring column with a 40-yard touchdown pass with 13:28 left in the game to make the score 10-7.
Fails hit Jarod Wood on a crucial 20-yard TD pass to put the Rangers up 17-7 with 4:02 left in the game.
With about 2:30 left in the game, KC freshman Jaylon Johnson picked off the Blinn quarterback -- what appeared to be a game-sealing interception.
The interception gave the Rangers the ball on their own 10 yard line. On the next play, KC fumbled the ball, resulting in a Blinn safety to make the score 17-9.
Blinn got the ball back with less than two minutes on the clock and steadily drove down the field. The Bucs faced a fourth down and 2 at the KC 27 yard line and were called for an offside penalty, making it fourth down and 7.
The Rangers stopped the Blinn offense once again, preserving the victory.
With the win, KC improves to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Region XIV play.
KC will play its homecoming game 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, versus Tyler Junior College.
