Rangers finish strong with defeat of Trinity Valley

ATHENS, TX -- Oscar Moore intercepted a Trinity Valley pass with seconds left to seal a 40-36 victory for the No. 6 Kilgore College Rangers against No. 6 Trinity Valley Community College in the season finale for both teams.

Typically, there would be conference playoffs set for next week, but those were canceled due to COVID-19 protocols set for the season.

Quarterback Malcolm Mays finished the game with 345 yards on 25 passes and wide receiver Willie McCoy hauled in five catches for 225 yards and two touchdowns.

Garrison Johnson led the rushing attack with 56 yards on 5 carries.

KC scored first early in the game on a 42-yard touchdown run by Garrison Johnson, but TVCC answered with a 2-yard score on the next drive.

The Rangers ended the first quarter with a safety on a blocked punt by Oscar Moore in the endzone, taking a 9-7 lead.

The Rangers began the second quarter with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Malcolm Mays to Bailee Davenport to put KC ahead, 14-9.

With 8:51 left in the second quarter, TVCC missed a 48-yard field goal. On the next drive, KC was forced to punt.

Demarcus Crosby picked off a TVCC pass with 6:18 left in the half to set up the Rangers close to midfield.

In the drive, Mays connected with Willie McCoy for a 41-yard touchdown pass to put the Rangers ahead, 15-14, with the missed extra point.

With 1:26 left in the half, TVCC made a 39-yard field goal, but KC responded in the final drive of the half with a 35-yard field goal by Tristan Driggers to put KC ahead at halftime, 18-17.

The Cardinals scored first in the second half with a 28-yard field goal to take a 20-18 lead.

On the next drive, Kenneith Lacy scored on a 2-yard touchdown scamper to take the lead for the Rangers.

With 5:14 left in the third quarter, TVCC scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass, but missed the two-point conversion, to take a 26-25 lead.

The Rangers responded witha 53-yard touchdown toss from Mays to Brandon Webb to take a 33-26 lead thanks to a 2-point conversion on a pass from Mays to Red Jones.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, TVCC scored on a 6-yard touchdown pass to tie the game up at 33 points.

After a bad punt attempt, TVCC drove down the field and completed a 33-yard field goal to take a 36-33 lead with 6:18 left in the game.

On the next drive, Mays connected with McCoy for an 80-yard touchdown pass to take a 40-36 lead.

With 4:54 left in the game, the KC defense came up big, holding TVCC on fourth down.

The offense sputtered on the next drive, however, forced to punt.

The Cardinals drove the ball down the field and got close to the endzone, but Moore intercepted the pass in the endsone with seconds left to seal the Ranger victory.

TVCC quarterback Matt Morrisey racked up 309 yards on 41 passes and two touchdowns. Cordrick Dunn rushed for 184 yards on 43 carries.

KC ends the season at 7-1 under second year head coach Willie Gooden. Trinity Valley drops to 6-2.
