Rangers defeat Coastal Bend, Lady Rangers lose to Angelina in 2OT

KILGORE, TX -- The Kilgore College men's basketball team evened up its conference record Dec. 4, while the Lady Rangers fought hard, but lost by one point to Angelina College in double overtime.

KC Men 74, Coastal Bend College 70

The KC men improved to 1-1 in Region 14 play with a 74-70 victory over the Coastal Bend College Cougars in Masters Gymnasium.

The Rangers led by as many as 11 points in the contest, and held the lead thanks to a 71.4 percent field goal percentage in the second half (63 percent shooting overall).

KC (9-2, 1-1) was led in scoring by D'Rell Roberts with 21 points, two assists and four steals.

Rodrigue Andela scored 13 points for the Rangers and Michael Thomas came off the bench to score 15 points.

Coastal Bend's Emmanuel White led all scorers with 25 points.

KC will travel Saturday, Dec. 7, to face Jacksonville College.  Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.


Angelina College 81, Lady Rangers 80 (2OT)

Angelina College led the Lady Rangers by as many as 8 points in the second half, but a scrappy KC team found a way tie the game to send it to overtime.

KC took the lead at the 1:19 mark in regulation when Sarah Matthews hit a jump shot, was fouled and made a free throw to take the lead, 53-51.

After a missed Angelina three-pointer, KC's Annillia Dawn made one-of-two free throws to increase the lead to 54-51 with 52.4 seconds left in regulation.

On the other end, AC's Tyeisha Smith was fouled and made both free throws to get within a point, 54-53, with 35 seconds left.

After a Lady Ranger turnover, AC's Lovietta Walker made a layup and was fouled.  She sunk the free throw with 22.1 seconds left to tie the game at 56 points.

KC got the last possession of regulation but missed a last-second three pointer, sending the game into overtime.

In the second overtime, KC was called for a foul with no time on the clock.  The clock was adjusted to .3 of a second and AC's Tai'Sheka Porchia made both free throws to defeat KC, 81-80.

KC was led in scoring by Ireneshia Johnson with 31 points, earning a double-double by adding 13 rebounds.  Johnson also had four steals.

Annillia Dawn was also in double figures with 22 points, three steals, seven assists and five rebounds.

Sarah Matthews came off the bench for KC to score 15 points and grabbing six rebounds.

Angelina's Lovietta Walker led all scorers with 33 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots.

The Lady Rangers (9-2, 0-1) will travel Saturday, Dec. 7, to Brenham to face Blinn College at 2 p.m.
