KILGORE, TX -- The Kilgore College Lady Rangers erased a seven-point deficit after halftime with a 19-6 run against the San Jacinto College Gators Nov. 21 in the two teams' conference-opener.
KC narrowly maintained its lead throughout the second half, slipping past the Gators, 69-67, to remain undefeated (6-0) and win the first conference game.
The Lady Rangers led by as many as 14 points in the second half (60-46) but he Gators chipped away at KC's lead and nearly caught up with the Rangers with less than a minute to play.
San Jacinto desperately fouled KC twice with 30 seconds left to get into the bonus. That's when Alicia Mardis, fouled twice consecutively, made her first two free throws to put the Rangers up by four points with 6 seconds left.
On her second round of free throws, Mardis narrowly missed both, but the rebound off the second miss was grabbed by Tyra Cormier to run the clock out and preserve the KC victory.
KC was led in scoring by Jade Thurmon who scored 28 points. The Gators held Richelle Velez to only one three-pointer but Velez ended up with 12 points, mostly with points in the paint.
San Jacinto was led in scoring by Eryka Sidney and Alexis Bryant who had 18 points each.
KC improves to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in Region XIV play. San Jacinto drops to 6-2 (0-1).
KC plays next in the Collin Classic in Allen (TX) Friday-Saturday, Nov. 24-25. They will play at noon each day, -- Friday versus Seminole State and Saturday versus Collin College.
The Lady Rangers resume conference play Nov. 29 in Brenham versus Blinn College.
