Lady Rangers stun No. 2 Trinity Valley, 84-81

KILGORE, TX -- The Kilgore College Lady Rangers stunned the national junior college ranks Feb. 16 with an 84-81 victory over No. 2 Trinity Valley in Masters Gymnasium.

KC came out on fire and were ahead of the Lady Cardinals, 25-12, after the first period.

With the Lady Rangers leading at halftime 47-35, everyone in the gym knew one thing -- that TVCC wasn't done.

The Lady Cardinals proved the fans' theory, chipping away at the lead, eventually tying the score at 71 with 4:35 left in the game.

After trading baskets and a missed field goal by TVCC, Patience Idoko was fouled and hit both free throws to put KC ahead, 75-73, with 2:53 left in the game

TVCC responded when Tra'Dayja Smith made a layup to tie the game up again at 75 points.

On the ensuing possession, KC's Alex Strawhorn was fouled going to the basket and made both free throws to give KC a 77-75 lead.

With 1:38 left, Jnaya Walker gave TVCC its first lead of the game, 78-77, by drilling three-pointer.

KC's Emely Rosario responded with a contested layup at the other end to put KC ahead by one point, 79-78.

After a TVCC basket, KC's Sarah Mgbeike drained a midrange jumper with 40 seconds left to put the Lady Rangers ahead, 81-80.

With 33.3 seconds left, TVCC's Arleighshya McElroy was fouled, but only made one-of-two free throw attempts to keep the score tied at 81.

KC broke the tie with 11.1 seconds left when Rosario hit a clutch running jump shot to put KC ahead, 83-81.

McElroy attempted a shot down low, but the shot was no good, rebounded by the Lady Rangers.  

TVCC was called for a foul on the rebound, which sent Mgbeike to the free throw line.  Mgbeike made one-of-two free throws to make the score 84-81 with 0.4 seconds left.

The Lady Cardinals inbounded the ball and got a three-pointer off, but the shot was no good.

Rosario led KC in scoring with 20 points and six assists.

Mbeike earned a double-double with 11 points and 18 rebounds.  She also had one steal and one assist.

Ireneshia Johnson was also in double figures for KC with 13 points.  Johnson made 2-of-3 three-pointers and had five rebounds.

Ta Shawnna Riggs, Alex Strawhorn and Alex Popham each scored eight points for KC.

Strawhorn was 2-of-6 from the three point line, Riggs made 1-of-2 three-pointers and Popham was 2-of-3 from three-point land.

Idoko ended up with six points and eight rebounds.

TVCC was led in scoring by McElroy with 28 points and Curtessia Dean with 24 points.

Dajaah Lightfoot had nine points and 14 rebounds, earning a double-double.

The Lady Cardinals drop to 22-2 overall and 12-2 in conference play.

KC improves to 17-8 overall and 9-5 in Region XIV play.

The Lady Rangers will travel Wednesday, Feb. 20, to play Coastal Bend College in Beeville.

Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
