SHREVEPORT, LA -- The scrappy Lady Rangers showed their grit one more time March 6 in the first round of the Region 14 Tournament, knocking off Panola College in overtime, 91-88, at Centenary College’s Gold Dome.
But it wasn't in the cards to advance past the next round as KC lost to TJC, 84-60, in the Region 14 Semifinals March 8.
It was an exciting and impressive year under first-year head coach Addie Lees as the Lady Rangers finish the season at 22-9 overall and 13-5 in conference play.
In the first round game, KC trailed Panola by 17 points at halftime, 45-28, but scratched its way back into the game, tying the game up at 72 points with 3:30 left in the game after two free throws by Sarah Mbeike.
The Lady Rangers also had to fight the unbelievable 50-point performance by Panola's Maryia Adashchyk.
After tying the game up, Adashchyk scored one of her many layups, was fouled and made the bonus shot.
On the other end, Patience Idoko was fouled on a jump shot and made one-of-two free throws to get within one point of Panola, 75-73.
Panola's Alicja Falkowska scored and was fouled, but missed the free throw to make the score 77-73 with two minutes left.
With 1:30 left, Mgbeike nailed a three-pointer to get within one point of Panola, 77-76.
Adashchyk scored once again with a layup with 25 seconds left to give the Fillies a 79-76 lead.
KC got the ball and Alexis Popham nailed a game-tying three-pointer from the baseline with 11.7 seconds left.
After a Panola timeout, Adashchyk missed a contested layup and the ball was rebounded by Mgbeike as KC called an immediate timeout.
KC had one last shot in regulation by Emely Rosario, but the shot was blocked to send the game into overtime.
Panola scored the first four points in overtime, but Popham got the Rangers in the OT scoring column with two free throws.
She was fouled by Panola's center, Falkowska, who fouled out of the game.
After a Panola turnover, Mgbeike fouled out of the game, ending up with a double-double effort with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
KC fouled Hope Parker on the other end and she made one-of-two free throws to make the score 84-81 with 2fri:15 left.
After a Panola turnover on an offensive foul, KC's Ireneshia Johnson scored and was fouled, making the free throw to make the score 87-84 with one minute left in overtime.
After Panola missed a three-pointer, KC's Riggs got the rebound and Rosario was fouled at the other end and made both free throws to go ahead by five points, 89-84, with 24.1 seconds left.
Panola's Adashchyk was fouled at the other end and made both free throws to get within two points of KC, 90-88, with 5.3 seconds left.
The Fillies were forced.to foul, fouling Idoko who made one-of-two free throws to make the score 91-88 with 4.1 seconds left.
Panola inbounded the ball but lost control if it as time expired.
KC had four players in double figures with Mgbeike with 24 points, Rosario with 23 points, Johnson with 15 points and Popham with 11.
Both Popham and Mgbeike were 2-of-3 from the three-point line.
Besides Adashchyk's 50-point performance, Falkowska earned a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
With Panola's loss, the Fillies end their season at 15-14 overall and 11-7 in conference play.
