KC softball team advances in R14 Tournament with win over Galveston

LUFKIN, TX -- The Kilgore College Rangers hung on to defeat Galveston College, 4-3, on May 14, advancing to the third round of the Region 14 Softball Tournament in Lufkin. The win was the first postseason victory in school history.

In the top of the fifth inning, KC tied things up at two runs when Lauren Corley singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring Christina Herrera.

In the top of the sixth, Kelsey Ahart blasted a solo homer over the left field fence to put the Rangers ahead, 3-2.  Nicole King increased the lead to 4-2 in the same inning with a home run over the left field wall.

Galveston got within one run in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk.

Mattie McQuary got the win for KC, going five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out three.

Micheala Latham threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen. Latham recorded the last four outs to earn the save for the Rangers.

KC had 11 hits in the game with Ellanisa Ortiz, Corley and Herrera each collecting multiple hits.

Corley and Ortiz each managed three hits to lead KC on offense.

KC advances to play San Jacinto College at noon on Wednesday, May 15, at Angelina College Softball Field in Lufkin.
