ATHENS, TX -- After the game, head coach J.J. Eckert gave the game ball to the Kilgore College defense because it held the No. 1-seed high-powered Trinity Valley Cardinal offense scoreless in the first three quarters, resulting in a dramatic 24-21 overtime victory for the Rangers Oct. 31 at Bruce Field.
Despite only scoring three points on offense, KC's defense stepped up defensively, intercepting five Cardinal passes, three of which were returned for touchdowns – the only touchdowns KC scored in the game.
Trinity Valley scored with no time on the clock in regulation to tie the game up, forcing overtime. On KC's first possession in OT, it managed a perfect 24-yard field goal by Troy Duran.
On TVCC's possession in overtime, KC's Jaylon Johnson intercepted a TVCC pass to end the game and terminate TVCC’s season.
With the victory, No. 4-seed KC (6-4, 4-3) will play next Saturday for the SWJCFC championship versus No. 3-seed Navarro. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana.
