What seemed like a game that the Rangers were running away with turned into a semi-nail-biter Oct. 18 against Blinn College in Kilgore.
With 9:50 left in the game, Corey Davis scored on an impressive 37-yard touchdown run to put KC up 42-14. That's when the Bucs turned up the heat on the Rangers scoring on a 16-yard touchdown pass, recovering an onside kick and scoring on the next play with a 51-yard pass to make the score 42-27 with 9:16 left.
On the next series, Blinn held KC to a three-and-out, got the ball back and drove down the field, capping the drive off with a 20-yard touchdown pass to make the score 42-34. Both teams weren't done scoring just yet.
KC answered with a drive ending with a 1-yard touchdown run by Eddie Smith to put the Rangers up 49-34. KC's defense held strong on the next drive and forced Blinn to attempt a short field goal. That's when KC's defense made possibly the biggest play of the game, blocking the short field goal to keep the Rangers up by two scores, 49-40 with only 1:49 to play.
Blinn's onside kick failed and the Rangers held on for the 49-40 victory over the Buccaneers.
Blinn began the game strong, scoring on a 71-yard touchdown run only 45 seconds into the game, but the Ranger defense forced four Buccaneer turnovers in the game with interceptions by Nick Fisher and Demontrai Taylor and two stripped balls for turnovers by Dequinton Osborne.
Kilgore tied the game up at 7 with a touchdown run by Eddie Smith, his first of three scores on the day. Javelle Allen scored next for the Rangers on an 11-yard run to put KC up 21-14 with 10:07 left in the second quarter.
Both teams had long plays for scores. The Rangers scored midway through the first quarter on a double-handoff 49-yard pass from Joe Lewis to Patrick Brown. Bilnn answered with a 51-yard touchdown strike with just over three minutes left in the first half to make the score 21-14 at halftime. Blinn also scored on touchdown passes of 71, 24, 20, 16 yards.
The Rangers came out after halftime and scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Averion Hurts to Chris Chumley to go up on the Bucs, 28-14.
With the win, KC moves to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in SWJCFC (conference standings). KC has only one game left Oct. 25 in Tyler versus the Apaches.
Blinn drops to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
