Five police academy instructors earn highest level of certification

Five East Texas Police Academy instructors recently earned the highest level of certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Instructors receiving the TCOLE Advanced Instructor Certificate are Joe Cassin, director; Travis Prew, range-master; Justin Willoughby; Margaret “Maggie” Martin; and James Pierson, adjunct instructor.

To earn the certificate, officers must hold the TCOLE instructor certification; have at least three years’ experience as a TCOLE instructor; and complete a rigorous 40-hour advanced instructor course.

Of the approximately 40,000 certified instructors in Texas, only 454 hold the TCOLE Advanced Instructor Certificate (about 1.25 percent).

“All but one of our full-time faculty at ETPA are now advanced TCOLE instructors. This demonstrates Kilgore College’s continued commitment to improving ourselves in our chosen profession such that we can provide the best possible product for our students,” said Michael Ferguson, Criminal Justice Instructor and Public Services Department Chair.
