Board recognizes outstanding students, employees

The KC Board of Trustees honors KC students and employees at most board meetings with an “Employee Spotlight” or “Student Spotlight.”

Employees are nominated by their supervisor/director/dean/manager and students are nominated by KC employees.


February 2020 Honorees:

  • Industrial Maintenance instructors Kelly Kaemmerling & Jody Bush accepted the Employee Spotlight Award for their work with Industrial Maintenance students, creating active and hands-on learning opportunities at KC-Longview.  Also pictured are Joe Carrington, board member; Shelly Chisnall, Industrial Maintenance student; Paul Smith, Industrial Maintenance student; and Dr. Brenda Kays, KC President.

December 2019 Honorees:

  • Brandon Walker accepted an award on behalf of the KC Math Department at the Dec. 16, 2019, board meeting. The KC Mathematics Department received the prestigious Math Pathways Award from the Charles A. Dana Center at The University of Texas at Austin.  Also pictured is board president Joe Carrington (far left); Dr. Brenda Kays, KC President; and Dr. Mike Turpin, Vice President of Instruction.

April 2019 Honorees:

  • Becky Johnson, Jase Graves and Brandon Walker were honored April 4, 2019, for their work in recreating the developmental educational model at KC.  Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

September 2018 Honorees:

  • Rangerette Officers for 2018-19 were honored by Shelley Wayne (assistant director of the Rangerettes) for their hard work, dedication and excellence in the classroom.  The average GPA among the five Rangerette officers is a 3.8.  Rangerette officers (left to right) are: Cierra Birmingham, captain; Sara Aguillard, lieutenant; Haley Carlile, lieutenant; Kelsey Little, lieutenant; and Ryan Wayne, lieutenant.  Also pictured is board vice president Brian Nutt (far left), college president Dr. Brenda Kays (second from far right) and Shelley Wayne (far right).

  • Fred Gore (vice president of administrative services and chief financial officer) was honored because of KC being awarded with a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).  The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting.  The annual GFOA recognition certifies that KC’s financial audit is prepared in accordance with guidelines recognized by nationally established standards.  Also pictured is board vice president Brian Nutt (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

August 2018 Honorees:

  • Jamie Council and Grace Kennedy were honored by D'Wayne Shaw (dean - Public Services and Industrial Technologies) and Michael Ferguson (department chair/instructor - Public Services Dept.) for their hard work and dedication to making the East Texas Police Academy one of the best police academies in the nation.  Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

June 2018 Honorees:

April 2018 Honorees:

  • KC student Justin Gipson was honored by automotive instructor Tanton Johnson.  Gipson was honored for being an exceptional student and for his outstanding performance in the automotive program as a leader and mentor. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

February 2018 Honorees:

  • The Retention Model Taskforce, comprised of Jimmy Rieves, Chris Gore, Ronda Lee and Ebony Dennis, were honored by Dr. Mike Jenkins, VP of student development, Feb. 12, at the KC Board meeting. Jenkins thanked them for their hard work in retaining KC students. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (second from far right).

December 2017 Honorees:

Adan Aguinaga honored as student of the month.

  • KC Board member James Walker was honored for 20 years of service to KC on the Board of Trustees.  In this photo, he was presented a plaque by board president Larry Woodfin.

  • KC student Madison Darwish was honored by Jimmy Rieves, KC's director of student development and athletics, for her outstanding achievements at KC. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

September 2017 Honorees:

Adan Aguinaga honored as student of the month.

  • KC student Maria Martinez was honored by Latasha Goodwyn, director of Adult Education & Literacy.  Maria began in the AEL program in 2014 as a Level I ESL student and has now:

Completed Level I and II of the English as a Second Language Program (AEL ESL Program).  Taken and passed all parts of the:

  1. Texas Education Agency High School Equivalency (HSE) Exam (AEL Adult Secondary Education Program)
  2. State of Texas Certified Nursing Assistant Exam (AEL Integrated Education and Training (JET Program)
  3. TSI College Entrance Exam (AEL Intensive College Readiness Program (CR)

She also applied for and was accepted into the Jan 2018 Kilgore College LVN Program (Intensive College Readiness Program). Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

  • KC Employees Cody Edwards (welding) and Randy Lewellen (dean of Public Services & Industrial Technologies) were honored for the KC High School Welding contest which was used to recruit students from agriculture programs across the state. The contest hosted 19 schools and had 86 high school welding contestants competing in the contest. The schools included: Woodville ISD, Mt. Enterprise ISD, Tatum ISD, Kilgore ISD, Livingston ISD, Rosebud-Lott ISD, Douglass ISD, Cushing ISD, Tyler ISD, Como-Pickton ISD, Magnolia West ISD, Huntsville ISD, Sabine ISD, Longview ISD, Jacksonville ISD, Pine Tree ISD, Frankston ISD, Carthage ISD and Rivercrest ISD. The contest allows high school students to visit the KC campus. Adan Aguinaga honored as student of the month.

  • KC employee Dewey Greer (Process Technology) was honored by Randy Lewellen (dean of Public Services & Industrial Technologies).  Greer has been at KC for 11 years and has been instrumental in making the KC Process Technology Program one of the fastest-growing programs at KC. Because of the size of the program, along with the math and science requirements of this program, he has worked with the other departments to schedule time and necessary course offerings to insure the process students can graduate in a timely manner. As KC embarks on its journey toward Guided Pathways, this is an excellent example of how disciplines across different areas can work together to help students achieve their goals. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

August 2017 Honorees:

Adan Aguinaga honored as student of the month.

  • KC student Anahi Muniz was honored by Kim Carrillo, American Honors academic advisor at KC, for her outstanding achievements at KC.  She graduated with honors from KC in the summer of 2017 and will transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio and enroll in pre-med courses.  She was also the recipient of the Chick-fil-a True Inspiration Scholarship worth $25,000.  Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

  • KC Employee John Dodd was honored by Raymond Caldwell, founder and artistic director of the Texas Shakespeare Festival.  Caldwell said that without Dodd's persistent work, the TSF wouldn't take place.  Dodd has worked for TSF for 31 seasons.  Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

June 2017 Honorees:

  • KC student Kassey McDonald was honored by Leah Gorman, director of alumni, scholarship and foundation relations  McDonald was praised for her outstanding work ethic in the alumni office.  Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far right) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far left).

  • KC Employee Pam Davis was honored by Chris Gore, registrar.  Davis is assistant registrar at KC and was praised for her unbelievable work habits at the college. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far right) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far left).

April 2017 Honorees:

Adan Aguinaga honored as student of the month.

  • KC student Antonio Kelly was honored by KC Process Technology instructor Dewey Greer for his outstanding work ethic and success in the Process Technology program.  Kelly, a native of Kilgore, will graduate this year.  Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

  • The KC Biology Department were honored by Louise Wiley, instructional division dean of the Math, Science and Health Sciences division.  Faculty members recognized were Lynn McCutchen, William Stowe, Leon Wooten, Dorothy Puckett, Debbie Williams, Jennifer Hudnall, & Jesse James.  Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

  • Former KC student Trenton Bennett was honored by Raymond Caldwell, founder and artistic director of the Texas Shakespeare Festival. Bennett graduated from KC and Stephen F. February 2017 Honorees:

Adan Aguinaga honored as student of the month.

  • KC student Adan Aguinaga was honored by KC facilities manager Judy DeRouen at the Feb. 27, 2017, board meeting as the "Student Spotlight." Aguinaga, a sophomore business major from Duncanville, serves as vice president of American Honors, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a Ranger Ambassador, is a teacher's assistant for the ESL program and is activity director of the International Student Club.  Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

  • KC employees Doris Johnson and Charleen Worsham were honored by Becky Johnson, dean of Liberal and Fine Arts, at the Feb. 27, 2017, board meeting.  Charleen serves as director of eLearning and Doris is coordinator of student support for eLearning.  Johnson praised Doris and Charleen for always going the extra mile to make sure KC distance learning was on the cutting-edge.  Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far left) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far right).

  • Former KC student Mazie Matthews Jamison was honored by Leah Gorman, director of development, at the Feb. 27, 2017, board meeting. Jamison was a Rangerette from 1967-69 and spoke at the meeting about how the Rangerette organization impacted her life and prepared her for a successful life after Kilgore College.  Jamison earned a bachelor's degree from The University of Texas and a master's degree from Texas State University.  Professionally, she served as a public policy officer and senior director of public policy for Children's Hospital in Dallas. September 2016 Honorees:

  • KC basketball player Ke'Asha Oliver was honored by head coach Anna Nimz Sept. 12 for Oliver's selfless attitude. Nimz nominated Oliver after seeing her selfless act last season when she sacrificed her playing time for the good of the team. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin and college president Dr. Brenda Kays.

  • Jane Lewis, KC's institutional research analyst, was honored by Dr. Staci Martin, vice president of institutional planning.  Lewis began working at KC last semester and has had a major impact in creating simplified student data reports with the new Jenzabar software. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far right) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far left).

August 2016 Honorees:

  • KC student Jeremy Swingler was honored by Corrie Thibodeaux, KC Bookstore manager. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far right) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far left).

  • Bobbie McGee-Benson, director of Adult Education and Literacy, was recognized by Dr. Julie Fowler, KC-Longview's executive dean.  McGee-Benson has worked in education for 45 years teaching public school, serving as the education specialist for Oklahoma Historical Society and working as manager of training and development for a Fortune 500 corporation.  She said her most valued time, however, has been spent working in Adult Education and Literacy at KC where she was first hired to start an Adult GED class in 1983. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far right) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far left).

June 2016 Honorees:

  • KC students Alex and Lori Jacobo were honored by Heidi Everett, TRIO learning specialist.  Alex and Lori were recognized by Everett as outstanding students in KC's TRIO Program. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin (far right) and college president Dr. Brenda Kays (far left).

  • Wendy Brown, chair and instructor of kinesiology, was awarded for her hard work in the classroom by Louise Wiley, dean of Math, Science and Health Sciences. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin and college president Dr. Brenda Kays.

March 2016 Honorees:

  • Kenya Ray, Corrosion Technology instructor, was awarded for her hard work in the classroom by D'Wayne Shaw, Automotive Technology instructor. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin and college president Dr. Brenda Kays.

February 2016 Honorees:

  • KC coaches Willie Gooden, Keith Browning, J.J. Eckert, Nick Dobler and Dale Vogel were honored by athletic director Jimmy Rieves for their hard work on and off the field.

November 2015 Honorees:

  • Glenn Wells, band director, was honored for his hard work and dedication by Becky Johnson, dean of Liberal & Fine Arts. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin.

  • Student Linda Thomas was awarded for her hard work in the classroom and perseverance in life by Jackie Kelley, who works in Financial Aid. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin.

September 2015 Honorees:

  • Employees who worked extra hours on the Jenzabar software conversion:  Martha Woodruff, Annette Morgan, Claudia Miracle, Leah Gorman, Pam Gattons, John Colville, Ray Jackson, Chris Carroll and Jackie Kelley.

  • Student Troy Townsend was honored by instructor Brandon Walker for his outstanding achievements in the classroom. Also pictured is board president Larry Woodfin.

July 2015 Honorees:

  • Kendra Roberson, a nursing student at KC, was named this month’s “Student Spotlight.”  Kendra serves as a tutor in the Zone and is vice president of fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa. 

  • Terry Huckaby was presented with the first KC Board of Trustees Employee Spotlight.  Huckaby, the Safety & Logistics Specialist at KC, will retire effective Aug. 31 after 24 years of service.
