Blinn College halts KC rally in 24-16 victory

KILGORE, TX -- The Kilgore College offense came alive in the third and fourth quarters with Jacob Frazier at quarterback Sept. 23, but the Rangers' rally fell just short, losing to the undefeated No. 6 Blinn College Buccaneers, 24-16.

The Rangers scored first with a 22-yard field goal by Jose Goite but Blinn answered with a 52-yard rushing touchdown by Phillip Jones with 6:03 left in the first quarter.

Blinn scored once more with 39 seconds left before the half on a 40-yard field goal by Ryan Buckley to make the score 10-3 at the intermission.

Ryan Franklin scored for Blinn on a three-yard run with 9:05 left in the third quarter to put the Buccaneers ahead 17-3.

After a KC three-and-out, Blinn scored again with 6:41 left in the third quarter on a 51-yard touchdown pass from Devin Williams to Quinton Newton, putting the Bucs ahead 24-3.

With 40 seconds left in the third quarter Frazier began the Ranger rally, connecting with Greg Mims for a 43-yard touchdown pass to put KC within two scores, 24-10.

The KC defense held the Bucs on the next possession.  With Frazier back in the game at quarterback, he tossed another touchdown pass, this time 40-yards to Kevin Jones with 10 seconds left in the third quarter.

KC missed the extra point, making the score 24-16.

The Rangers seemed to have life in the fourth quarter after Blinn missed a 31-yard field goal with 9:58 left in the game.

On the next drive, Jones made an amazing one-handed catch from Frazier for 20 yards on third-and-seven with eight minutes left in the contest.  On the next play, Rod Ford made another great catch for 20 yards.

But the Ranger drive dissolved with the Blinn defense forcing KC to punt.

KC had life once more with the KC defense forcing a Blinn punt from its own 8 yard line.  The Rangers fielded the punt with a fair catch at the 50 yard line but the Buccaneer defense forced a quick three-and-out for KC.

Blinn got the ball back with 2:46 left in the game and managed consecutive first downs to run the clock out to win the game 24-16.

Frazier finished the game 7-of-11 passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

KC running back Carlos Frank rushed 63 yards on 14 carries and Demarcus Smith had 60 yards on 11 carries.

Kilgore finished the game with 12 penalties for 125 yards.  Blinn had nine penalties for 55 yards.

KC outgained the Buccaneers in offense 324 to 232.

With the loss, KC drops to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.  Blinn improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

The Rangers are on the road Sept. 30 facing Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.

Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Miami, Okla.
