The program, called ServSafe, is administered by the National Restaurant Association and is accredited by ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and the Conference for Food Protection. The certification is valid for 5 years. Texas requires that a person-in-charge (PIC), owner, or employee of a food service establishment - (i.e., bars, restaurants, mobile vendors, food trucks, caterers, assisted living, and day care centers) be a Certified Food Manager (CFM) as outlined in the Texas Food Code by successfully passing an ANSI-accredited and Texas Department of State Health Service approved-food safety certification exam. The tuition for this course is free thanks to the safety grant from Texas Mutual Insurance, which includes the proctor fee. However, you will need to purchase the textbook package that includes an individual exam voucher $68.50.
