About the program:

Kilgore College offers an Associate of Arts degree with a Field of Study in Music. Students may pursue either an associate degree focusing on music or may take elective music lessons without pursuing a music-related degree. Music studies at Kilgore College offer students the opportunity to receive individual instruction in all major performance areas and to be involved in a variety of ensembles. Music students at Kilgore College are afforded numerous performance opportunities, many of which would be often reserved for third and fourth-year students at larger four-year institutions.

What scholarship opportunities are available?

Students involved in music studies at Kilgore College may apply for scholarships that can cover partial to full tuition expenses. These music scholarships are available to both music majors and non-majors for participating in ensembles (such as band and choir), and may enable the student to pay in-district tuition. Those interested in applying for music scholarships should contact the music department faculty approximately three months prior to the semester's start to receive priority consideration.

Where can music graduates transfer?

Graduates of this two-year program transfer successfully to universities of their choice to complete their music education, many of them becoming recipients of partial to full scholarships from the receiving institutions.

What is the job outlook for graduates?

A variety of career opportunities are available to those with music degrees including performance, teaching, conducting, composition, music business, church music, sound engineering, music therapy and many others.

What kind of salary can graduates expect?

Salaries for musicians depend upon the area of specialization. Qualified music teachers earn salaries comparable to other teachers in the workplace. Band and Choral directors often receive additional salary stipends for their work with their performing groups.  Successful performers, sound engineers, music therapists and other technicians name their fees. Salary levels rise with the level of achievement within the field.

How long does it take to complete the program?

Two years (four semesters) are required to complete the Associate of Arts in the Field of Study Music degree.

Can students participate in band, choir, guitar or piano ensemble without majoring in music?

Yes. All students, whether they major in music or not, are welcome to audition and participate in any ensemble sponsored by the Kilgore College Music Department.
