Overview
of
Theatre/Drama

Theatre students share the excitement of theatre production and studies with an experienced faculty in a wonderful theatre setting. Our goal is to offer students a comprehensive theatre program which prepares them to transfer with academic and performance skills that provide their greatest opportunity for success at the university level.

What do graduates of the program do?

Our students hone their skills in acting, voice, movement, fencing and musical theatre. They will know Design and Stagecraft: Scenery, Costumes, Lights, Props, and Makeup.

What is the job outlook for graduates?

The job market for theatre and drama majors is diverse and includes stage, movie cinema and television opportunities.

W
hat kind of salary can graduates
expect?

Salary varies.

How long does it take to complete the program?

An Associate Degree takes two years. Then it can be transferred to an university.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in four Main-stage Productions (click for listings of past productions) each year. Responsibilities on Technical Crews, Stage Management positions, and Acting assignments allow each student to receive a variety of production experiences.

The KC Theatre Department seeks to balance a rigorous production and performance schedule with a substantial and challenging academic experience. Small classes (average ratio - 1 to 16) allow each instructor to give students a great deal of individual attention, enhancing the probability of the student establishing good study habits and a higher G.P.A. Opportunities for immediate performance assignments are an additional plus in this department. For almost four decades the KC Theatre program has enjoyed an excellent reputation state-wide and the support of its administration and campus-wide faculty.

The Theatre classes and performances are housed in the beautiful Van Cliburn Auditorium. The Van Cliburn Auditorium is an intimate house, seating approximately 300, which can accommodate proscenium, arena, and thrust theatre. It is equipped with state-of-the-art light board and sound board computers. Students with a strong interest in technical theatre will have ample opportunities to learn and operate both boards.

An unique feature of which KC theatre students may take advantage is the possibility of working as apprentices with the Texas Shakespeare Festival. A summer spent with the Festival can provide students with the opportunity to work and study with artists from the professional theatre world.

Our department has a variety of generous theatre scholarships and assistantships available each year.
