Potential Students

Dear prospective student,

I hope that you will consider Kilgore College. Our student newspaper, The Flare, has won the Sweepstakes award in the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association and the Texas Community College Journalism Association for more years than any other community college in our contest division. I am a firm believer in hands-on learning, giving students the opportunity to work on a weekly publication.

Our students are prepared to transfer to a university when they leave Kilgore College; our editors easily step right into editorial staff positions at the universities of their choice. Our graduates are also successful and gainfully employed at many newspapers and communications-related businesses across the state and the South-- the Associated Press, The Dallas Morning News, Know Atlanta (magazine in Atlanta, Georgia), 20th Century Fox, Longview News-Journal, The Wall Street Journal, Tyler Morning Telegraph, Kilgore News Herald, Henderson Daily News, Lufkin Daily News, Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel, Overton Press, and advertising agencies and public relations positions in Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin - just to name a few! We are proud to have the reputation of graduating students who are well-trained - students bosses want to hire!

Our photography instructor, O. Rufus Lovett, is also outstanding. He in an award-winning photographer who frequently has work published in Texas Monthly and other state and national publications. His photographs are part of the permanent collection in the Houston Museum of Fine Art and have frequently been a part of the Governor's Exhibit. He was awarded runner-up for Life magazine's Alfred Eisenstaedt Award 2000 for Best Magazine Photography in the way we live single image. He also has a newly released book, "Weeping Mary".

We are a small community college in northeast Texas, just south of Interstate 20 between Dallas and Shreveport, La., and only 10 miles from Longview (a city of 72,000). Kilgore College offers all of the advantages of a community college: small classes, instructors with at least master's degrees (NO teaching assistants), affordable tuition and fees (about half of university costs) and hands-on learning experiences. We also have a university atmosphere: residence halls, athletic teams (football, men's and women's basketball and men's and women's tennis) many clubs and organizations, the Rangerettes (world-famous drill team), a weekly newspaper, a yearbook, job placement office, theater productions, art exhibits, Phi Theta Kappa (international honors organization) and an active Student Government Association.

You can find a scholarship application here and under "Journalism".If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call me at (903) 983-8194. Also, feel free to e-mail me at bcraddock@kilgore.edu.

Let us know if you can schedule a campus visit; we would love to introduce you to journalism at Kilgore College!

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Bettye Craddock
