SELECTION CRITERIA FOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
Criteria for admission to the Surgical Technology Clinical Program are:
- All application requirements for Kilgore College and the Surgical Technology Program must be met.
- THEA requirements must be completed before acceptance into the program. This includes either THEA exempt status, passing THEA scores, or passing alternative test scores.
THEA exempt status
- Student has completed a three-hour college level course prior to Fall semester of 1989.
- Sufficiently high scores on TAAS, SAT, or ACT. (See KC Catalog)
Passing THEA scores
- A score of 220 or greater on Math, Reading, and English ().
- A score of 230 or greater on Math and Reading, and a score of 220 or greater on Writing (Beginning September, 1995).
- Earn minimal test scores as required by Kilgore College for placement into college level courses. (Please see the Kilgore College Catalog section for Admission, Testing, and Placement.) Completion of required developmental classes based on Kilgore College testing and placement policy.
- Completion of BIOL 2401.
- Available transportation to clinical affiliate sites in Tyler, Longview, Henderson, and Marshall.
- Display of honest and dependable actions from references. ( employers or teachers preferred)
- Availability of adequate time for studies and clinical practice.
- Display of genuine personal desire for a career in Surgical Technology.
Interview Process
- The Admissions Committee will interview the applicant and will review the applicants qualifications to determine admission to the Surgical Technology Program. All applicants will be numerically ranked and placed into available openings according to their rank. Admission determination is based on the above criteria and on numerical values derived from the following:
- Scores from the Admission Committee interview.
- Completion of prerequisite for BIOL 2401.
- Grade points earned from completed courses required in the ST curriculum.
- Points for completing BIOL 2401, 2402, and 2421 (Anatomy and Physiology I and II, and Micro) with the following grades, if the course is completed after no more than two attempts:
A = 25 points
B = 20 points
C = 15 points
The applicant will be notified of acceptance status by letter. Students accepted into the program must do the following:
- Return Verification of Acceptance and Intent To Enroll Form.
- Return completed Medical Form.
- Provide documentation of a recent TB skin test or chest x-ray.
- Provide documentation of the following immunizations:
- Tetanus booster within the last ten years
- Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) booster since early childhood
- Hepatitis B series begun. (can be obtained through Kilgore College)
- Provide documentation of current CPR certification. (Healthcare Provider Course only)
APPLICATION/ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
GENERAL ADMISSION
- Admission to Kilgore College
- THEA or alternative test scores (see Kilgore College catalog)
- Interview with Surgical Technology Program Director
- Completion of first and second semester courses
II ADMISSION TO SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY COURSE SEQUENCE
- Completion of General Admission Requirements.
- Completion of the following courses with a grade of C or better:
BIOL 2401 - Human A&P I
BIOL 2402 - Human A&P II
SRGT 1301 Medical Terminology
- Completion of THEA and/or developmental requirements.
- Attend one pre-admission session.
- Submit application materials in Spring semester (no later than March 30).
- Interview with the Admissions Committee.
Students who have successfully completed the above requirements will be placed in the next beginning Surgical Technology Class in which openings are available. The Surgical Technology courses are limited by available clinical space to 12 students per year. (See Selection Criteria for Surgical Technology Program Page)
****EXCEPTION: Students who have previously completed the accredited Certificate Program in Surgical Technology at Kilgore College may apply to the A.A.S. Degree Program. The A.A.S. Degree will be awarded upon completion of the required courses.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
To complete application requirements for the Surgical Technology program, applicants must:
- Meet all requirements for admission to Kilgore College, including testing and completion of any required developmental courses.
- File the following information with the Surgical Technology Department no later than the application deadline date of March 31.
- Completed Application to Surgical Technology Program (enclosed).
- Degree Plan Development form (enclosed) and official transcripts.
- Test scores from one of the following:
- ACT - Composite score below 23 and below 19 on English and Math sub tests: Placement testing required.
- SAT - Below 500 on Verbal and Math Sub tests: Placement testing required.
- Kilgore College alternative placement test.
- THEA (Official)
*ACT/SAT scores more than 5 years old: Must take placement tests.
Students who score low on THEA or the local placement tests will be placed in specified developmental courses according to the Kilgore College Placement Policy (see criteria in Kilgore College catalog - Admissions, Testing, and Placement section).
- Two completed applicant reference forms. These should be mailed directly to the Surgical Technology Department by the person completing the form.
- Short essay stating why you want to become a Surgical Technologist.
- Physical requirements form, signed and dated.

After the required information outlined above is on file, an interview with the Admissions Committee will be scheduled.
NOTICE TWO APPLICATIONS ARE NEEDED
Applicants to the Surgical Technology Program must file a Kilgore College Admission Application form with the Registrar and a Health Occupations Program Admission Application (form enclosed) with the Surgical Technology Program Director at the addresses below. These application forms must be complete and contain accurate mailing addresses.
