Overview of Surgical Technology

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners who provide surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate safe and effective surgical procedures by ensuring that the operating room or environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique. He/she combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and instrumentation, tools, and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

What do graduates of the program do?

Members of operating room teams that typically include surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses. They prepare surgical instruments and equipment, prep patients, monitor vital signs, keep track of materials used during surgery, transport specimens to the lab and other support duties.

The job market for surgical technology is very good.

Average yearly earnings for surgical technology is $29,400 to $36,200.

How long does it take to complete the program?

An Associate of Applied Science Degree takes two years. A total of 65 semester hours or the Certificate in Surgical Technology options takes two years with a total of 50 semester hours to complete.
