STUDENT SUCCESS PROGRAMS

Kilgore College is committed to helping students succeed! We offer a wide variety of programs to prepare and equip you for a successful college experience.

Our Mission and Purpose: We believe that students who succeed in their academic and co-curricular experiences will sustain that success here and in future transitions into upper level college classes and/or their careers. Our purpose is to provide and coordinate academic and support services for all Kilgore College students as they make the transition from their previous environment and move forward into the future.

Student Success services include:

Orientation
New Student Orientation to Kilgore College is required for all first time college students. There are several options available and some form of Orientation is offered prior or during each long semester and on both the Kilgore and Longview campuses. The purpose is to aid new students in their transition to Kilgore College, expose them to the broad educational opportunities at Kilgore College, and integrate them into the life of Kilgore College.

College Success Classes (Institutional credit only)
These courses are designed to further assist students in having a successful college experience. Students become part of a group and make connections with other students during the course. Study skills, Time management, goal setting and planning, learning styles, and career investigation are important components of the courses. Currently these courses are not required but are strongly suggested, especially for students with developmental requirements.

Student Success Guide/Planner
This little book is free for our full time students and includes a fifty-two week daily planner along with valuable tools for success such as College Success Tips. Planner pages are marked with important Kilgore College events and deadlines. These are distributed during Welcome Week.

Study skills counseling, study skills tapes, and viewing facilities.
The director is willing and ready to work with and/or advise students regarding various problems or situations that may arise. The office door in SS111 is open! We also have a variety of VHS tapes on various “success” issues, such as test-taking, note-taking, study skills, etc. A room can beprovided for students to view the tapes on campus. Tapes may also be checked out overnight.

Student Success Tutoring Lab
Located in the Student Support Building at SS119, the tutoring lab is open 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday/Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday/Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday.

Free Tutoring
Available in Math, Science, Reading, English, Social Studies, Speech, and most core curriculum courses. Student Success Programs cooperates with the Adult Resource Center/TRIO to provide free tutoring to anyone who requests it. Computer and Internet access are provided for student use in the tutoring labs. On-line tutoring is also available through SMARTTHINKING.com.

Textbook and Equipment lending
A limited number of textbooks, tape recorders, and TI-84 calculators are available each semester.
