Rangers wrap up spring football drills with annual Blue-Gray Game

April 25, 2009--The Kilgore College Rangers finalized spring drills April 25, wrapping up practice in preparation for the 2009 football season.

"We're really excited about the upcoming season," said head coach J.J. Eckert. "We have some holes to fill, but this game gave us a great look at what talent we have returning."

Eckert and the Rangers finished last season at a mark of 6-4 (5-3), making the playoffs for the third straight year.

Three quarterbacks saw action in the spring game including sophomore Lane Johnson from Groveton and newcomers Chase Fisher (Kilgore) and Cal Farley (Keller). Fisher led all passers with 9-13 passes completed for 78 yards.

"We still have some work to do in the quarterbacks position, but I was relatively pleased with the improvements they have made this spring," Eckert said.

Sophomore tight end Jordan Scoggins led all receivers with 5 catches for 33 yards. Freshman receiver Kelvin Hall (Jacksonville) also had five catches for 37 yards, including a nice 17-yard catch in the corner of the end zone, to score the offense's only touchdown.

The defense stole the show, though, recording 8 three-and-outs and 13 negative offensive plays. Kicker David Bailey also made a 37-yard field goal and was 1-1 on extra points.
