ADMISSIONS GRADING CRITERIA

Admission to the PTA Program is limited to 16 students and is based on an accumulation of points. A maximum of 58 points is possible. The submitted application is first scored to determine eligibility with the top 40 or so applicants being offered an interview. Of these total points, a maximum of 21 points is possible for grade points in support courses and cumulative GPA’s in Anatomy & Physiology and all college-level sciences. The interview can account for up to 16 points with the same interviewers utilized, all applicants being asked the same questions, and a scoring form utilized. The reference forms and personal letter account for a maximum of 6 points. A student can gain or lose up to 5 points for their score on the HOBET. If considerably more than the minimum required number of observation or work hours is obtained, additional points may be awarded up to a maximum of 6 points. If negative comments are noted on the Volunteer/Observation Forms, points will be deducted. Lastly, a maximum of 4 additional points can be awarded if the student lives in the Kilgore College service area, has taken their support courses at Kilgore College or at a school where there is an articulation agreement in place (i.e. TJC), is a previous applicant, or has participated in physical therapy professional activities.

Drug Screen and Criminal Background Check

If a student is offered a slot in the PTA Program, it is conditional upon successfully completing a drug screen and criminal background check at specific required sites within a narrow time frame.  If any positive result shows up on the drug screen, the student has the opportunity to contest or explain the result, but if the result stands, the student will forfeit their slot in the program.  If any positive result shows up on the criminal background check (including misdemeanors, deferred adjudication, etc.), the student is required to contact the Texas State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners in writing explaining the situation and circumstance surrounding the criminal incident.  The student MUST receive a written response from the licensing board stating this would not prohibit the applicant from getting a license as a physical therapist assistant in Texas BEFORE the student can enter the program.  If an applicant knows ahead of time that something will show up on the criminal background check, they are encouraged to go ahead and contact the Board for written clearance instead of waiting because this process takes time.

HOBET EXAM

The HOBET (Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test) is part of the PTA admissions process, but only for those applicants who have been granted an interview.  This exam MUST be taken at the Kilgore College Testing Center because different versions of this exam may be offered at other institutions or facilities.  It is a basic exam to test mastery of reading and math but also tests critical thinking and test-taking skills.  More information about this test will be provided to those applicants who are required to take the exam.
