Phlebotomy



  Educational Choice  


The Phlebotomy course is held at Kilgore College in the Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center. This 200-hour course consists of 80 hours of classroom lecture, 20 hours of classroom clinical, and 100 hours of site clinical. The class meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the first seven weeks and then continues to meet on Tuesday at the same time for the last six weeks. Clinical rotation begins after the 7th week. Enrollment is limited to 14 students.

Please email jwashburn@kilgore.edu to request the upcoming application information and include your name and mailing address requesting the Phlebotomy information to be mailed to you. We will place you on the mailing list and send the information at the appropriate time.


Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and must have obtained a high school diploma or GED. All applicants must submit to a comprehensive Reading Placement Test of which the minimum passing score is a 20 on the Reading Level 0306. Neither a college transcript nor exemption from college entrance testing will substitute for the Placement Test score. All applicants at their own expense must submit to a drug test and a background check thru DATCS.

Applicants must provide proof of childhood immunization records and a letter of interest. If you do not have a record of your childhood immunization, you may want to contact the school that you attended, your physician, or your county health office. If you cannot locate your record, please seek advice from your physician or health clinic.


On the first day of class, students must provide proof of a negative TB Tine test and of having started or completedthe Hepatitis B vaccination series is not already provided with your application records. Students needing the test or vaccine may obtain these from their family physician or health clinic. The instructor will discuss student Healthcare Provider CPR certification on the first class day.

Site clinical begins after the 7 th week of class. You must be available to attend clinical to successfully complete this course. Clinical locations, days, and times may vary. S tudents are responsible for attending clinical at the locations and times assigned. Students must adhere to all policies and procedures of the clinical sites. Students are subject to drug screens and criminal history checks by clinical sites. Students are required to wear an identification badge, scrub suit and leather athletic shoes during site clinical. ID badges will be provided thru the class. These items will be discussed prior to clinical assignments.

Students must pass their classroom work and exams with a minimum 75% average before site clinical will be assigned. Students must pass the final course exam, have a 75% overall grade point average, and complete 100 hours site clinical to be eligible to apply for the national certification exam (ASPT). The instructor will discuss registration and payment for the exam at the appropriate time.


Testing: $30 payable to Kilgore College thru the Business Office Cashier located in the Devall Student Center

Tuition: $550 (includes tuition of $520 and $30 required insurance fee) payable by cash, check, or credit card

Textbook: $90 (approx.) - Phlebotomy Essentials, 5th Edition available at the Kilgore College bookstore.

Scantron: Three 100 question capacity scantrons/Scantrons are available at the KC Bookstore for 25 cents each.

Childhood Immunizations: Basic immunizations such as MMR;TD,TDAP;Varicella

Drug Test and Background Check: Obtain both screens thru the Drug and Alcohol Testing Compliance Services located at 450 E. Loop 281, Ste. C-2, in Longview, TX. Their telephone # is 903-234-1136.

Hepatitis B Injections: Hepatitis B injections are required by clinical sites and are highly recommended due to the nature of this field of study. Students may obtain the series from their family physician or health clinic.

TB Tine Test: Please obtain this test through your family physician or health clinic.

CPR: The instructor will discuss Healthcare Provider CPR certification on the first class day.

ASPT Test: $85 payable by money order to ASPT will be due at the appropriate time as directed by the instructor.


Testing Information:

Once you receive the course and application information, please reserve a seat with the Testing Center at 903-983-8215. Prior to arriving for testing, you must pay a $30 testing fee at the Cashier’s Office at the Devall Student Center located at 1100 Broadway, Kilgore, TX 75662. On the testing day, please present your paid receipt and a valid photo ID at the Testing Center of the Devall Student Center. A score of at least 20 on the Reading 0306 Level is required. Candidates may retest after 10 days if there is another test scheduled for that time. Secure your testing scores after the test as your testing scores must be submitted with your application.


Application Information:

You must submit a completed application form including the following documentation to the Continuing Education Office on or before the application deadline designated for the next course:

  • Copy of Birth Certificate
  • Copy of High School Diploma, or copy of High School Transcript, or copy of GED
  • Kilgore College Comprehensive Reading Placement Test Score of at least 20 on the Reading 0306 Level
  • Childhood Immunization Records
  • Two completed Kilgore College Phlebotomy Applicant Reference Forms – please do not submit reference forms completed by friends.
  • Letter of Interest –a typed, single-page letter stating your interest in the Phlebotomy course and your goals.

You will need to submit to a drug and a background check as instructed by Kilgore College in order to have the information back to us by the application deadline:

Selection process:

From the complete applications, we will select up to 20 applicants to interview for acceptance into the class. The criteria used for selection to interview will include the Reading Test score and the scores from the two reference letters. Only applicants with the highest scores will be contacted to schedule an interview. Fourteen applicants will be selected from those interviewed for acceptance into the class. Criteria for selection will be the previous scores, a score from the letter of interest, and a score based on the interview. Admission to the Phlebotomy program is conditional upon payment of tuition.
