The Phlebotomy course is held at Kilgore College in the Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center. The 200-hour course consists of 80 hours of classroom lecture, 20 hours of classroom clinical, and 100 hours of site clinical.
A High School diploma or GED and testing are required for this course. Enrollment is limited to 14 students as limited by available clinical positions.
Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Site clinical begins approximately the 7th week of class. Clinical locations, days, and times may vary. Students are responsible for attending clinical at the locations and times assigned. Students are required to wear a identification badge, scrub suit and leather athletic shoes during site clinical. These items will be discussed prior to clinical assignments.
On the first day of class, students must provide proof of having started or completed the Hepatitis B vaccination series. Students may obtain the series from their family physician or health clinic. Students are subject to drug screens and criminal history checks by the clinical sites and are required to submit to a drug test and a background check prior to the first class day. The instructor will discuss student Healthcare Provider CPR certification and TB Tine test on the first class day.
Students must pass their classroom work and exams with a minimum 75% average before site clinical will be assigned. Students must pass the final course exam, have a 75% overall grade point average, and complete 100 hours site clinical to be eligible for the national certification exam (ASPT).
Tuition: $500 (includes tuition of $470 and $30 required insurance fee)
Textbook: $90 (approx.) - Phlebotomy Essentials, 4th Edition available at the Kilgore College bookstore.
Scantrons: 100 question capacity-available at KC bookstore. Cost: 15 cents each
Identification badge: ID badges will be provided thru the class.
ASPT Test: $85 payable by money order to ASPT will be due at the appropriate time.
CPR Healthcare Provider Certification: The instructor will discuss Healthcare Provider CPR certification on the first class day.
TB Tine Test: TB Tine testing is required by clinical sites. Please obtain this test through your family physician or health clinic.
Hepatitis B Injections : Hepatitis B injections are required by clinical sites and are highly recommended due to the nature of this field of study. Students may obtain the series from their family physician or health clinic.
Drug Test and Background Check: Obtain both screens for $44 thru the Drug and Alcohol Testing Compliance Services located at 450 E. Loop 281, Ste. C-2, Longview, TX.
