Band Activities

Glenn Wells directs both the Ranger Band and the KC Wind Symphony. The Ranger Band is the college marching band and performs at fall athletic events and a number of parades, exhibitions, and other venues across Texas. The Wind Symphony is an auditioned concert ensemble of prescribed wind symphony instrumentation. This ensemble of forty-five members performs contemporary wind band literature of a grade of V and VI level. The Kilgore College Bands also feature a Jazz Ensemble and a Jazz Combo. These groups perform traditional and contemporary jazz, blues, and big band repertoire. Other available ensembles within the band program include chamber ensembles for brass and percussion.

Choral Activities

Under the direction of Jim Taylor, Kilgore College's four choral ensembles are very active. The KC Chorale is the college's large mixed ensemble comprised of auditioned music and non-music majors. Camerata Singers is a select chamber choir that performs challenging music composed for small ensembles. The East Texas Community Chorus is an evening civic choir designed for interested adults that presents regular semester concerts. The East Texas Youth Chorus is a community chorus for area home schooled and private school students who are in high school.

Composition Studies

Students interested in studying composition or electronic music have many unique opportunities to do so at Kilgore College. Opportunities for composers of all styles include intensive private instruction, guest lectures, master classes, concerts, field trips, digital workstations for study in electronic music , manuscript preparation, as well as MIDI sequencing, sampling, and film scoring.

Instrumental Studies

Instrumental studies at Kilgore College are taught by full-time and part-time faculty members in many areas, including brass, guitar, piano/organ, strings, and woodwinds. Scholarships are typically awarded based on audition and ensemble participation.

Piano Studies

The piano studies at Kilgore College offer the serious piano student a variety of performance opportunities. An annual concerto study with orchestra takes place each spring spotlighting piano majors as they perform a movement of a concerto with orchestral accompaniment. Piano events hosted by Kilgore College include an annual Bach Festival, Concerto Competition, and the David Karp Piano Festival. The KC Piano Ensemble and the Keyboard Orchestras are comprised of students who perform on electric pianos with sequencers. These traveling teams perform for civic groups, clubs, and other organizations.

Vocal Studies

Voice students at Kilgore College may register for credit as music majors/minors or for elective credit only. As a music major, voice students will study, memorize, and perform selections including arias in their original language, Italian art songs, German lieder, French chanson, and folk songs from various cultures. Majors will also register for MUSI 1157, Opera Workshop, where they will have the opportunity to present a children’s opera each fall to hundreds of area young persons; each spring, they will choreograph and perform duets and ensembles from operas and Broadway musical in year-end Spring Vocal Concert.

Opera Workshop

The Kilgore College Opera Workshop provides unique opportunities for vocal majors to perform on stage, both as part of an ensemble and as soloists. Each fall The Opera workshop presents a children’s opera for hundreds of East Texas school children, with Kilgore College vocal students performing all roles. In the spring, Workshop members have the opportunity to stage and present repertoire from Musical Theatre in the annual Spring Vocal Recital. In addition, the Opera Workshop gives vocalists an opportunity to perform for one another, attend master classes and, whenever possible, attend professional opera performances. The Opera Workshop is a required course for all voice majors, but non-majors are able to enroll with instructor permission.
