Vocational Nursing Program
(LVN)
This program consists of a combination of classroom instruction at Kilgore College--Longview, and clinical training at local hospitals and medical facilities.  Two classes are admitted annually.  One in August and one in January.  A Certificate of Completion is awarded upon successful completion of course requirements.  Students will then be eligible to take the state board examination to receive their vocational nursing license.

Tuition and Fees

  Tuition:  $2068 (In-District)
 $4371 (Out-of-District)

Textbooks, uniforms, and supplies: Approximately $2500.

Admission Requirements
• High School diploma or equivalency diploma (GED)
• Satisfactory results on the NET Exam.
•Good Mental and Physical Health.  A complete physical examination is required prior to final acceptance
• Completed Vocational Nursing Application form with all transcripts
Important: Applicants must have Hepatitis B injections completed (takes 6 months) in order to apply for the program. No exceptions will be given. Proof will be required.
• Clear criminal History background check.
• Clear drug screening.

Modifications in Admission Requirements
The Vocational Nursing Program will require the following 20 hour support course as a pre-requisite for entry into the program: COMG 1003 (Communication Skills for the workplace) This is a five day mini-camp that provides students with skills to achieve success in college.

Applicants also have an option to take the following courses prior to acceptance into the program:

•VNSG 1420: Anatomy and Physiology for Allied Health
•VNSG 1216: Nutrition

Applicants who take these courses in advance will receive points based on their grades therefore increasing their chances of acceptance into the Vocational Nursing Program.  This option lightens a student's load which may also increase their chances of success in the program

Testing and Making Application
In addition to regular college admission requirements, prospective students must be accepted into the program by the Vocational Nursing Committee.  For consideration, Kilgore College's NET test is required.  Testing dates for prospective vocational nursing students are scheduled throughout the year. Contact Educational Resources, Inc. at 1-800-292-2273 to schedule an appointment. Applications for the August program will be accepted until May 15th and applications for the January program will be accepted until October 15th.

• $50. cash, credit card, or money order
• Early registration is suggested

Acceptance: 
Receiving an application does not guarantee acceptance into the program.  Prospective student applications are rated by test scores and other criteria.  The top students from the application pool will be accepted and all other applicants will be placed on a Waiting List.  After the class starts, the Waiting List is discarded.
Re-entry:  Students who drop due to "unsatisfactory clinical performance" or who have dropped from the program twice are not candidates for re-entry.

Point Rating of Applicants
The 35-40 applicants with the highest scores are accepted into the Vocational Nursing Program.  All others are placed on the Waiting List.  Scores are determined from the following:

Test scores:
The greatest number of points an applicant receives is from the NET Exam scores.
Certified Nurse Assistant Class attendance is strongly recommended.  Extra points are given if the applicant has attended a CNA course.  A copy of your certificate is necessary for validation or a student can be presently enrolled and taking CNA class at KC--Longview.  Contact Kilgore College's main office at 903-753-2642 for more information about CNA classes that begin every three (3) weeks.

• VNSG 1420: (A&P for Allied Health)
• VNSG 1216:(Nutrition)
Extra points are given if applicant has taken these courses.  Points are based on the applicant's grades.  Must submit copy of transcript from college for validation of scores.  

General Information
A.  52 week program, 35-38 hours per week, Monday - Friday
B.  Time (approximate & vary each day):  Class:  All classes at KC--Longview 7:30 am - 3:30pm.  Clinical:  At various Longview facilities 6:45am - 3:00pm. Evening clinical rotations are also required (12:00 noon - 9:00 pm).
C.  Holidays, Christmas vacation, Spring Break in accordance with Kilgore College calendar.

Job Opportunities:
The Vocational Nursing Program offers many opportunities for employment after only 12 months of training.  Many LVN's work in acute care hospitals.  Many more have discovered opportunities in nursing homes, extended care facilities, physicians offices, public health agencies, and child-care centers.  With the demand for nursing in health care, the prestigious profession of nursing offers you an opportunity for job satisfaction in the rewards of caring for others, while also providing for employment opportunities and job security.
