Commemorative Stamp Cancellation
Oct. 3 all day. Commemorative cancellation at the Joinerville Post Office and the Boomtown Post Office inside the East Texas Oil Museum.
Kilgore Postmaster Chuck Maxwell will issue cancellations on special envelopes in the Museum Post Office and cancellations will be handled at the counter at the Joinerville Post Office.
This is not a commemorative stamp, but rather a commemorative cancellation. The regular Post Office rules will apply in that you can, if you wish, send a self addressed, stamped envelope to the Post Offices and they will cancel and mail it back to you. Plans are also underway for a special Jubilee commemorative envelope.
Cancellations: Special Postal Commemorative cancellations have been approved by the U.S. Post Office Department for use to cancel stamps at the two Museums on this day. This is not a commemorative postage stamp, just a special cancellation to commemorate the East Texas Oil Field in Joinerville and the East Texas Oil Museum in Kilgore.
How to obtain cancellation: There are two ways to obtain a cancellation.
A. You can, under U.S. Post office procedures, send a self addressed and stamped envelope to the post office in Joinerville or Kilgore with a request that it be cancelled and returned to you on October 3. There is no charge for this type cancellation.
B. Each Museum Post Office will have specially designed envelopes for sale with the commemorative cancellation of a regular issue stamp like, for example, the WW II Memorial stamp. This envelope and cancellation will be a collectors item that will only be issued on October 3, 2005. Each Museum may issue cancellations on Oct 3 for sale at a later date. The sale price has not been set yet, but will be about $2.50.
