Human Resources - Full-Time Faculty

STATEMENT ON FACULTY QUALIFICATIONS
This memorandum will provide basic information about the required academic preparation of faculty at Kilgore College. Faculty who teach courses in the arts and sciences, (i.e., courses which are baccalaureate degree oriented) must have completed at least 18 graduate hours in their teaching field and possess a master's degree. Faculty who teach occupational courses (i.e., vocational, technical, health occupations, etc.) which lead to employment after one semester, one year, or two years of study, should hold an associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree, depending upon the particular program at Kilgore College, and have significant experience in business or industry.

Academic Programs

Kilgore College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This regional accrediting body clearly spells out the required minimum academic credentials for faculty. Additional credentials may and generally are required by the Board of Trustees of Kilgore College and the Coordinating Board of the Texas College and University System. The Commission on Colleges in its Criteria for Accreditation states the following:

In an associate degree program, full-time and part-time faculty members teaching credit courses in the following areas: humanities/fine arts; social/behavioral sciences; and natural sciences/mathematics must have completed at least 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline and hold at least a master's degree, or hold the minimum of a master's degree with a major in the teaching discipline.

In order to meet the above requirement, the following teaching fields have been identified at Kilgore College:

Humanities and Fine Arts

  • Art
  • Art/Commercial
  • Anthropology
  • Dance
  • English (including literature)
  • Foreign Languages (French, German, Spanish)
  • History
  • Music

  • Biological Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Engineering
  • Geology

Social and Behavioral Sciences

Business Administration

  • Accounting
  • Computer Science
  • Business Administration  (Includes management, finance, marketing, business law, etc.)
  • Economics

Education

  • Health Education
  • Physical Education

Strong preference will be given to applicants who have more than one teaching field. Examples of combinations might include English and reading, history and government, sociology and psychology, accounting and economics, theatre and speech, and mathematics and chemistry. One should remember, however, that 18 graduate semester hours are required in each field. A word of caution about "education courses" is necessary. These courses, while they contribute to one becoming a good teacher by addressing teaching methodology, will not satisfy the requirement for 18 graduate hours in the teaching field.

Occupational Programs
Faculty who teach in office administration, computer science, mid-management, fashion merchandising, early childhood professions, and associate degree nursing are required to hold a master's degree with a concentration in the teaching field or a closely related field. Those who teach in the technical fields of occupational education are required to hold at least a bachelor's degree while faculty who teach in the more hands-on vocational programs should possess an associate's degree. All faculty who teach in occupational education must have at least three years work experience in business or industry. In exceptional cases, outstanding professional experience may be considered in lieu of formal academic preparation.

Special Notes
It is important for potential applicants to know that should they be offered employment while having only one teaching field, they may be required to commit to earning sufficient graduate hours for a second teaching field in a period not to exceed three years from the date of employment.

Finally, Kilgore College will accept only the following employment application materials:

  1. Kilgore College Application for Employment.
  2. Letter of application (one page only).
  3. Short resume (maximum of five pages).
  4. Unofficial copies of transcripts.

Please do not send any other materials as they will be discarded.

Kilgore College will accept applications for academic teaching positions in teaching field(s) listed above. Application materials for any other field(s) will be discarded.
