Health Science Transcript Evaluations

Transcripts for Health Sciences at Kilgore College should be evaluated by the Health Science Counselor. Over the years, many hours have been invested in the evaluation the major feeder schools catalogs. This allows for a quick, consistent and reliable way to respond to questions from distant campuses about transfer. This information provides a way to place in writing the pre-requisites and the equivalent courses needed for the chosen health science program. The Counselor provides course equivalencies information daily and monitors course equivalencies essential for good advisement and correct course selection.

With the increased competition for admission to professional health science programs at Kilgore College, it is essential to have the Health Science Counselor evaluate transcripts continuously as the need occurs. Thereby, setting a "benchmark" to determine a list of deficiencies. Granted, the Health Science department chair have unofficially evaluated their own transcripts for years to screen their applicants. The Health Science Counselor with extensive study in course equivalencies can offered a final opinion on transferability.

It is our practice to evaluate only official transcripts and post grades directly to the computer. A copy of the degree audit and evaluation is sent to the student within two weeks of receipt of the transcript. The student is encouraged to proof-read and respond for updates and corrections. This allows the student to know the results and improves and maintains the accuracy of transcript evaluation. All health science students are ask to send their official transcripts directly to the Health Science Counselor. After evaluating the transcript, the counselor will date, specify the program and initial. The official transcript is filed in the Office of Admissions.

Physical Therapy Assistant, Medical Assisting Technology, Radiological Technology and Surgical Technology

How many are accepted each year?
Each year, these programs should receive over 100 applicants; interview 50+ and select (14) for Physical Therapy Assistant, (14) for Medical Assisting Technology, (14) for Radiological Technology and (12) for Surgical Technology.

What describes the "ideal" applicant?

No. 1 Completion of the Pre-admission studies:

The pre-admission studies is a 6-12 month period of both academic and vocational preparation. During this time,(1) students are encouraged to complete the basic support courses, (2) to complete all assessment and developmental requirements, if applicable. (3) to seek out career information exposure in their chosen health occupation.

No. 2 Career Information Exposure:

Ideally, you should seek out career information exposure, one year prior to interviews. "How well you interview relates to the amount of career information exposure." You need to meet with someone who works in the career field and learn as much as possible about the nature of the work. A wide range of career information exposure will increase your vocational maturity.

For the Physical Therapy Assistant and the Radiological Technology programs; it is true that you will be required to spent a day of observation in a hospital; assigned to a contact person. "You are being evaluated during your day of observation."

No. 3 Character:

Generally, we think most persons, who want to enter a helping profession can find good character references, so #1 and #2 are very important.
