KILGORE COLLEGE'S RECOMMENDED H1N1 RESPONSE PROTOCOLS
Recently, you have heard a lot about the novel H1N1 flu pandemic. According to a representative of the Texas Department of State Health Services, 99% of the patients testing positive for the Type A flu strain so far this season have the H1N1 virus. However, not every illness is H1N1.
Common symptoms of the H1N1 flu are:
  • Fever of 100 degrees or more
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Chills
  • Extreme Tiredness
  • Dry Cough
  • Runny Nose
  • Stomach Problems

You do not need to experience all of these symptoms to have the flu. If you have one or two, it's recommended that you seek medical attention.

POSSIBLE FLU INFECTION CHECKLIST

1) Practice proper infection control.
  • Frequently wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds
  • Use hand sanitizer often
  • Use proper cough/sneeze etiquette – cough into your sleeve or a tissue, not your hands!
  • Discard used tissues promptly
  • Practice social distancing – stay at least 6 feet away from those who appear ill
  • Do not share food, drinks, or personal care items with others
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
2) Be prepared to get sick.
  • Create a flu-pack that includes a mercury-free thermometer, tissues, hand sanitizer, fever reducing medications such as Advil or Tylenol, noncarbonated beverages, and aerosol disinfectant
  • Students should make a contact list of their instructors, phone numbers and e-mail addresses for use in notifying faculty in case of an illness
3) Get a seasonal flu vaccine as soon as possible
4) If you are in a targeted group, get the novel H1N1 vaccine as soon as it’s available
5) If you are sick – stay home!
  • Remain home until you are fever free for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing medications such as Advil or Tylenol.
