Fire Academy Online
Continuing Education Program/Certificate

Kilgore College Online Fire Academy
is one of the first certified training facilities in Texas to offer both on-site and online training options.

Our online training offers Fire Commission approved firefighter training to the students that are not able to attend traditional courses due to work, family or personal issues. The online academy allows the student to study from their home and complete the online requirements with course work including power point presentations, video clips, practice tests, and online assessment tests. Courses now offered on-line include: Basic Fire Academy, Arson Investigator, Fire Inspector, Driver/Operator – Pumper, Fire Officer I & II, Instructor Levels I, II, & III, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, Phase V, Firefighter I and Firefighter II. Also offer Volunteer Firefighter Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Training.

Upon successful completion of the online portions of course curriculum, students will attend on-site Skills Training Session associated with said course for which mastery of all required skills will be practiced and demonstrated. During Basic Fire Academy skills session, students are required to stay on campus for full skills session. Upon successful completion of these skills, the student will be eligible to sit for the Texas Commission on Fire Protection Written and Performance Certification exams.

NEW! Earn your Associate of Applied Science in Fire Protection online

The Kilgore College Fire Academy will begin offering a new online program this fall—one that current certified firefighters might have a burning interest in.

The new online program provides a curriculum that, when completed, will award graduates with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Protection.

The course is a total of 60 hours which includes the Basic Fire Academy training.  Students who have completed a certified commissioned academy can receive 23 hours credit towards their degree and take the remaining 37 hours online.

“The lab fees are free to current employed paid Texas firefighters,” Earley said. “They’ll only have to pay for books. It’s great because they can complete the online coursework while maintaining their full-time jobs.”

Earley, who has been with the KC Fire Academy since its inception in 1989, said firefighters who complete the program will have better promotional opportunities and will be more marketable in the field. Earley also said that since it is a degree program, students are eligible to apply for financial aid, whereas in the past, Basic Fire Academy students didn't’t qualify for financial aid.

“We encourage anybody who is interested in the program to come see us and apply for financial aid if they need it through our financial aid office on campus,” Earley said. “With the program starting this fall, sooner is better.”

Students who have never taken courses at KC will need to apply at www.kilgore.edu. Returning students who have been out more than a semester will need to fill out a Student Update Form from the Office of Admissions and Records.  Classes begin Aug. 23.
