What is a "major" and how do I choose one?
Major—an academic designation defining the concentration of your upper-division (junior/senior) course work decide what type of occupation you would like to pursue and then find out what major would best prepare you for that type of work.
New "field of study" curricula (eg. music, business, nursing, elementary ed.) make it possible for students to transfer a block of courses for certain majors.

What majors does Kilgore College offer?
If you plan to transfer to a university, you do not actually major in a particular field at Kilgore College. Select general education courses and other more specialized courses considering the requirements of the particular university and major you have chosen.
The exceptions to this are for those majoring in business administration, criminal justice, computer science, advertising/public relations, journalism/mass communications, radio and television broadcasting/broadcast journalism, music or nursing (BSN). For these transfer programs, please see the applicable Field of Study curriculum in the Kilgore College Catalog.

What courses do I take if I just want the basics?
Start with courses in the 46-hour Kilgore College Core Curriculum. When successfully completed, this will substitute for the core curriculum at any state institution in Texas.
If you have chosen a major but not a university, consult the list of suggested electives by academic field found in the Kilgore College Catalog for other appropriate courses.
If you have decided on a major and a university to which you will transfer, consult the appropriate university catalog or web site for applicable courses. Counseling Center personnel can assist students in accessing this information.
