East Texas Community Chorus will present concert

Nov. 17 concert will feature a broad cross-section of music from different styles, periods

The East Texas Community Chorus will present a pre-Thanksgiving fall concert titled, “A Cornucopia of Choral Music,” on Tuesday, Nov. 17.  The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at First Methodist Church in Longview.

According to Jim Taylor, ETCC Director and Director of KC’s Choral Activities, the concert will feature a broad cross-section of music from different styles and periods.  The concert is free and open to the public.

The first portion of the concert will include music with sacred liturgical texts: selections from Mozart’s “Mass in C Minor,” English cathedral music and a new setting of “Gloria” by Taylor.

The second portion of the concert is, “For Love and for Fun,” and will contain settings of classic English and Irish folk songs, as well as new pieces, one of which is in a jazz-vocal style.  The concert will conclude with a medley from Leonard Bernstein’s, “West Side Story.”

Taylor is in his first year as Director of Choral Activities at KC, as well as director of the ETCC.

Taylor comes to East Texas from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he has been working on a doctoral degree in Choral Conducting for the past three years.

Before that, he had a career in church music, having served large Presbyterian churches in Florida, Colorado and Alabama.  Taylor is also a composer, having composed over 25 choral octavos in print, and has conducted several times in the Ukraine.

The ETCC is part of KC’s School of Music and Dance, and is operated through the Department of Continuing Education.

Taylor said it is open to area adults and high school students who can “hold a harmony part and love to sing.”

Registration takes place at the beginning of each semester, and rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Longview.

Upcoming concerts this year include Rutter’s “Gloria,” among other works, at First United Methodist Church in Longview on March 2, 2010, and Schubert’s “Mass in G,” and a Bach cantata, set for May 4, 2010, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Longview.

Both of these concerts will feature a combination of the ETCC and the KC Chorale, accompanied by an orchestra.
