TECA 1303 .

Families, School, & Community

(3-3-1)

Study of the child, family, community, and schools. Includes parent education and involvement, family and community lifestyles, child abuse, and current family life issues. Course content is aligned with State Board for Educator Certification Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities standards. Requires students to participate in a minimum of 16 hours field experience with children from infancy through age 12 in a variety of settings with varied and diverse populations. Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306. Laboratory fee $30. F, Sp (1301015209).

 

TECA 1311 .

Educating Young Children.

(3-3-1)

An introduction to the education of the young child. Includes developmentally appropriate practices and programs, theoretical and historical perspectives, ethical and professional responsibilities, and current issues. Course content is aligned with the State Board for Educator Certification Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities standards. The course requires students to participate in 16 hours of field experiences with children from infancy through age 12 in a variety of settings with varied and diverse populations. Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306.F, Sp (1312025109).

 

TECA 1318 .

Wellness of the Young Child

(3-3-1)

Factors impacting the well-being of young child. Includes healthy behavior, food, nutrition, fitness, and safety practices. Focuses on local and national standards and legal implications of relevant policies and regulations. Course content is aligned with State Board for Educator Certification Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities standards. Requires students to participate in 16 hours of field experiences with children from infancy through age 12 in a variety of settings with varied and diverse populations. Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306. . F, Sp (13101015309).

 

TECA 1354 .

Child Growth and Development

(3-3-0 )

A study of the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive factors impacting growth and development of children through adolescence. Course content is aligned with State Board for Educator Certification Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities standards. Prerequisite: Must be TSI complete in reading or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0308. F, Sp (1312025209).

CDEC 1413 .

Curriculum Resources for Early Childhood Programs.

(4-3-2)

A study of the fundamentals of curriculum design and implementation in developmentally appropriate programs for children. Participation in an early childhood setting is required. Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306.. Laboratory fee $30. F (1907090009).

 

 

CDEC 1419 .

Child Guidance

(4-3-2)

An exploration of guidance strategies for promoting pro-social behaviors with individuals and groups of children. Emphasis on positive guidance principles and techniques, family involvement and cultural influences. Practical application through direct participation with children. Participation in an early childhood setting is required. Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306.. Laboratory fee $30. Sp (1907090009 ).

 

CDEC 1421 .

The Infant and Toddler

(4-3-2)

A study of appropriate infant and toddler programs (birth to age 3), including an overview of development, quality care giving routines, appropriate environments, materials and activities, and teaching/guidance techniques. Participation in an early childhood setting is required. The student is responsible for transportation to off-campus site. Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306.. Sp (1907090009).

 

CDEC 1456 .

Emergent Literacy in Early Childhood.

(4-3-2)

An exploration of principles, methods, and materials for teaching young children language and literacy through a play-based integrated curriculum. Participation in an early childhood setting is required.  Prerequisite:  Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306..  Laboratory fee $30. F (1907060009 )

 

CDEC 1459 .

Children with Special Needs.

(4-3-2)

A survey of information regarding children with special needs including possible causes and characteristics of exceptionalities, intervention strategies, available resources, referral processes, the advocacy role, and legislative issues. Participation in an early childhood setting is required. The student is responsible for transportation to off-campus site. Suggested Prerequisite: TECA 1354 . Prerequisite: . CDEC 2428 .

Administration of Programs for Children II.

(4-3-2)

An in-depth study of the skills and techniques in managing early care and education programs, including legal and ethical issues, personnel management, team building, leadership, conflict resolution, stress management, advocacy, professionalism, fiscal analysis and planning parent education/ partnerships, and technical applications in programs. Participation in an early childhood setting is required. Suggested Prerequisites: Six hours of child development course work, CDEC 2426 , or advisor approval. Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306.. Sp (1907080009).

 

CDEC 2441 .

The School-Age Child.

(4-3-2)

A study of appropriate programs for the school-age child (5 to 13 years), including an overview of development, appropriate environments, materials and activities, and teaching/guidance techniques. Participation in a school-age setting is required. The student is responsible for transportation to off-campus site. Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306. . Sp (1907090009).

 

CDEC 2474 .

Preschool Children: Learning Environments, Activities, and Materials.

(4-3-2)

A course focusing on developmentally appropriate practice during the preschool years. This course includes developing and designing interest areas and environments for discovery learning, scheduling and planning age appropriate activities, and writing daily and weekly activities and objectives. The student will demonstrate a knowledge of the adult's role in the preschool environment and techniques to encourage family involvement. Participation in an early childhood setting is required. CDEC 2475 .

Early Childhood: Independent Study.

(4-2-6)

A study of an approved career topic. Research, presentation of findings and practical applications are emphasized as they relate to the selected topics. Students must meet periodically with the course instructor to report progress. Participation in an early childhood environment is required. Prerequisites: TECA 1311 , CDEC 1413 , and CDEC 2426 . CDEC 2486 .

Internship: Child Care Provider/Assistant.

(4-0-13)

A work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. A learning plan is developed by the college and the employer. Participation in an early childhood environment is required. Prerequisites: TECA 1311 , CDEC 1413 , CDEC 2426 , and CDEC 1419 . Laboratory fee $30. Sp (1907090009).

 

EDUC 1301 .

Introduction to the Teaching Profession.

(3-3-1)

The course provides the students with an introduction to and analysis of the culture of schooling and classrooms. Requires students to participate in 16 hours of field observations at all levels of Primary-12th Grade schools with varied and diverse student populations. (Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 or be concurrently enrolled in READ 0306 .) F, Sp (1301015109).

 

EDUC 2301 .

Introduction to Special Populations.

(3-3-1)

The course provides an overview of schooling and classrooms from the perspectives of language, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnic, and academic diversity and equity with an emphasis on factors that facilitate learning. Requires students to participate in 16 hours of field observations of Primary-12th Grade special populations. Prerequisite: EDUC 1301 . F, Sp (1310015109).
