ARTS 1301. Art Appreciation.
Art Appreciation is an exploration into the many aspects of art as it occurs within the cultural environment. Basic visual elements and design principles, processes and media used by artists, historical styles as influenced by time, place and people are examined. Prerequisite: Eligibility to enroll in READ 0306. F, Sp, Su (5007035126).

ARTS 1303. Art History I.
Art History I is a one semester lecture course open to all college students. Enrollment requires no prerequisite and satisfies three hours of Humanities or Fine Arts Elective credit. This course presents a chronological survey of the cultural, technological and artistic developments in Western Art from the Paleolithic age to the Medieval Gothic period. Artworks will be examined within the cultural, political and economic environments in which they were created. Prerequisite: Eligibility to enroll in READ 0306. F (5007035226).

ARTS 1304. Art History II.
Art History II is a one semester lecture course open to all college students. Enrollment requires no prerequisite and satisfies three hours of Humanities or Fine Arts Elective credit. ARTS 1311. Design I.
An analytical approach to the elements and principles of design. Emphasis is on line, form, texture, and color in two-dimensional space organizations. Laboratory fee $25. Prerequisite: Eligibility to enroll in READ 0306. F, Sp (5004015326).

ARTS 1312. Design II.
Continuation of ARTS 1311. This course concentrates on creative problem solving of the visual elements and principles of design with an emphasis on three dimensional spatial organization. Prerequisite: ARTS 1311. Laboratory fee $25. Sp (5004015326).

ARTS 1316. Drawing I.
Introduction to the basic disciplines of drawing through the use of still-life, landscape, architecture, and conceptual ideas. Laboratory fee $25. Eligibility to enroll in READ 0306. F, Sp (5007055226).

ARTS 1317. Drawing II.
A continuation of the survey begun in ARTS 1316, Drawing I, as an exploration of various drawing media in recording information observed from the human figure, still life arrangements and landscape forms. Additional exploration includes color media, compositional variations, and strategies for personal expression. Laboratory fee $25. Eligibility to enroll in READ 0306. Sp (5007055226).

ARTS 2313. Design Communications I.
Introduction to fundamentals of graphic communication including processes and techniques of layout design, typography, and illustration. Student must have a passing score on the THEA reading, have completed or have concurrent enrollment in READ 0308. Laboratory fee $25. F (5004015126).

ARTS 2314. Design Communications II.
Further studies in graphic communication with emphasis on graphic layout for advertising art including the combination of type and illustration. Prerequisite: ARTS 2313 or equivalent. Student must have a passing score on the THEA reading, have completed or have concurrent enrollment in READ 0308. Laboratory fee $25. Sp (5004015126).

ARTS 2316. Painting I.
Introduction to basic principles of mixing and application of opaque painting media on various painting surfaces. Course work includes studies in the properties of the media with various subject matters and the study of various styles of painting. Laboratory fee $25. ARTS 2317. Painting II.
Continuation of ARTS 2316 with emphasis on experimentation with style and media. Prerequisite: ARTS 2316 or the instructor's approval. Laboratory fee $25. Sp(5007085226).

ARTS 2326. Sculpture I.
Basic exploration of sculptural concepts and technical processes using various materials to translate ideas into three-dimensional form. Prerequisite: ARTS 1312 and/or the instructor's approval. Laboratory fee $25. F (5007095126).

ARTS 2327. Sculpture II.
Continuation of ARTS 2326 with emphasis on individual expression. Prerequisite: ARTS 2326. Laboratory fee $25. F, Sp (5007095126).

ARTS 2356. Photography I.
Introduction to the basics of photography. Technical information includes camera operation, negative exposure and development, black and white darkroom techniques, enlarging, composition, flash exposure, lenses, filters, studio lighting, and use of exposure meter. Emphasis is on design, history, and contemporary trends as a means of developing an understanding of photographic aesthetics. Laboratory fee $30. Prerequisite: Eligibility or enroll in READ 0306. ARTS 2357. Photography II.
An advanced study of film exposure and development of darkroom techniques including preparation of chemicals, printing and developing, and creative darkroom techniques. This course extends the students' technical knowledge and guides them toward personal outlooks and applications. Prerequisite: ARTS 2356 or equivalent. Laboratory fee $30. Sp (5006055226).

ARTS 2389. Academic Cooperative.
An instructional program designed to integrate on-campus study with practical, hands-on experience. In conjunction with class seminars, the individual student will set specific goals and objectives in the study of studio art and/or art history. Prerequisite: instructor’s consent.
