Nursing Program Design

Program Design

The program design of the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Kilgore College is based on the belief that the individual is a unique product of environment, cultural and life experiences. The curriculum addresses the changing needs of the community and the health profession as well as the physiological, psychological and spiritual needs of individuals and families. The following concepts form the basis of the program design: THE ROLE OF THE NURSE, CLINICAL DECISION MAKING, SAFETY and EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE. Caring, ethical integrity, professional growth and communication are unifying threads that support the concepts and are integrated throughout the courses.

The ROLE OF THE NURSE is Provider of Care, Coordinator of Care and Member of Profession. As provider of care, the nurse provides safe nursing care for individuals and families with caring, competence and commitment. Through the use of interpersonal skills, problem solving and clinical decision making, the nurse assesses, diagnoses, plans, implements and evaluates the care provided. As Coordinator of Care, the nurse collaborates with other healthcare providers, coordinates care and delegates aspects of nursing care to others as appropriate. The nurse effectively manages resources in an advocate role for individuals and families. As Member of the Profession, the nurse practices within the ethical/legal framework of the profession, with responsibility and accountability for nursing practice and through promotion of excellence and a commitment to lifelong learning, projects of a positive nursing image.

CLINICAL DECISION MAKING is both an intellectual and a creative process that enables the nurse to think critically and make sound clinical judgment. The nurse utilizes the nursing process in decision making to provide safe, evidence-based, holistic nursing care ofr multi-cultural clients and their families.

SAFETY is the culture and environment insured by the nurse that protects the physical, psychological, microbiological, chemical or thermal safety of the client.

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE is the systematic process of uncovering, evaluating and using information from research as the basis for making clinical decisions and providing client care.
