How do I get started?
Look on the first page of the Kilgore College website. Read the Registration Guide and complete all of the items. Call the Office Professional Program Director if you have any questions.
I am an older student and I'm afraid to make this step. Can you help me?
At least half of our classes are comprised of students who are retraining. The older students do very well because they have been in the workforce and they understand the need to study. Many of them express the same doubts but they do very well.
How can I find out if I'm qualified for financial aid?
Make an appointment with the East Texas Educational Opportunity Center. They will help you free of charge. Call (903) 757-9660.
I have taken other courses at another school. Can I transfer those credits?
Kilgore College will accept courses from another institution. We will accept a limited number of courses.
Can I work and still attend school?
Many of our students attend school and work. Many employers are willing to schedule work around the schedule of the student. Most of our classes meet in the mornings but the schedule does vary from one semester to another.
What do graduates of the program do?
Graduates of this program are prepared to work in any business. Every business requires the help of an administrative assistant. The opportunities are unlimited. The United States Department of Labor projects that employment in this profession is projected to grow. Job opportunities are excellent because of the need for new employees and attrition.
What kind of salary can graduates expect?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national median salary for Office Professional is $27,450 and for the Office Professional Specialist is $28,090. Local salaries will vary.
Do you have a medical office professional program?
Yes, but the medical portion of the program is offered after the student has finished the general certificate. The skills in the general certificate are essential in any medical setting. This portion is offered in the third semester and includes medical terminology, transcription, medical administrative procedures, communications and advanced concepts in Microsoft Word.
How long does it take to complete the program?
The Office Professional General certificate can be completed in nine months. The Office Professional Specialist or Medical certificate will take an additional five months. Requirements for the associate’s degree can be completed during the summer or in an additional semester.
What certification tests are offered?
We offer certification tests in Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and QuickBooks. We also offer WorkKeys assessments and will assist students in preparation of their portfolios.
Do I have to take all of the courses or can I take a lighter load?
If you wish to complete the certificates in three semesters, you need to take a full load. The courses are arranged so that they fit together when you take a full load. If you take a partial load, it will take you four or five semesters to complete the program.
Will you help me find a job upon graduation?
We will help you put together your portfolio which includes preparing your resume’ and your references. We also work on interviewing. We will give you all of the skills that you need to find a job.
What is your job placement rate?
Our placement rate varies from 90 to 100 percent each semester.
